If you go to the site suggested by Daff (the link takes you to the main page) put in your car details on the left hand side and it will take you to the exploded diagram.
Look for the part that looks most likely and Google the part number. It should come back with a result which will tell you what it is called.

There are various free pdf downloads available from

http://www.pdf-word.net/automotive-guide-volkswagen-pdf.html

Hopefully you will find a diagram there - it's a great and really useful site!

Hi Caz David said it does sound like the catalytic convertor which is the most expensive bit an dit may be wise to change the lot.Because once one bit goes they all follow Check wit Kwick Fitt they do some good deals.
Also he said see if there is a workshop manual in pdf on line then you will be able to see the part and know for sure get the part number and maybe there will be ne on ebay.
He said with out seeing it or hearing it he is not sure.

Is it metal?
Doesn't sound like the cat to me and if it is, they are very expensive.

Germaine Report 28 Nov 2007 19:07

Hi Caz
Our David said if it is the piece between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust system it is the exhaust down pipes.
Be careful it might be cheaper in the long run to renew the whole system.

I googled and found this....................any help??

If you need to replace the manifold then this is a complete list of what you require if you also choose to replace all the gaskets and fasteners:

1 gasket for manifold to cylinder head
2 gaskets for manifold to exhaust pipe
9 bolts for inner and outer manifold heat shields
2 studs for upper edge of manifold to head joint
2 nuts and washers for upper edge of manifold to head joint
3 bolts for lower edge of manifold to head joint
1 bolt for lower manifold to bracket into engine block
3 studs for exhaust pipe to manifold joint
3 nuts for exhaust pipe to manifold joint
