Went in last night in terrible pain in her left side and back. Thought it might be a kidney infection because she has blood in her urine, but today, after a scan they have said that she has a kidney stone. Has to have ultrasound tomorrow, and then they will decide what is to be done.

Anyone ever had a kidney stone? If so, what treatnment did you receive?

Abby has just been told that she can come home. Has fifteen!!! small kidney stones that showed on CT scan. Nothing to be done except see if she'll pass them, or go back if she gets same problem again.

No I have not, but have been told it is a very painful thing. Don't they usually just leave it to pass itself, unless it's too bad, and they operate.

Hope your daughter is back on her feet soon.

my hubby has had them ,but he passed his.
they tend to use laser now unless there are a lot of them and they are big.

I had one several years ago now and the pain is indescribable, much worse than labour pains as the pain is inside the kidney so nothing you do makes any difference, I would have stood on my head it if would have helped but no matter how I moved, not knowing what was wrong at the time, nothing stopped the pain. I was kept in hospital for several days, having to piddle in a pan to see if the stone, (which was actually only the size of a grain of rice) came out and had to drink lots of liquid, preferably water, or very diluted squash in my case. When the stone didn't come out but the pain has resided cos presumably it had moved somewhere less painful, I was sent home still with a pan, lol, which I gave up using after a while as how can you cart a bedpan round all the time? and told to return if the pain came back. Several months later, I was checked again and taken in hospital so I could have a camera inserted, as nothing could be seen on the screen but they weren't sure if I had passed the little blighter. The doctor asked me if I had heard it come out, did it ping in the toilet pan, he asked. Well I hadn't but then I don't piddle that forcefully lol
When the camera was used, nothing was found, and thankfully, touch wood, I have had no further problems. I was advised to drink lots less coffee so I only usually had one a day or none, and to make sure I kept my fluid intake up.
Hope your daughter 'pings' her stone out soon, give her my best wishes as I know how bad the pain is, and tell her to cut down on the coffee and up the water intake.

Yes, I have and the pain is almost as bad as giving birth!

Last time I had a problem was over 20 years ago and they were "zapped" under general anasthetic, but I believe things have move on since then. I had problems for around 3 years and then it just "went away", and hasn't happened since.

She is definately in the right place and will get sorted. It seems to be a random thing, a build up of calcium, I asked if there was anything I could do to stop it from happening again and was told that in some cases drinking lots of water works and in some cases it doesn't. So, basically not much you can do to prevent it happening again, really. Having said that my last "attack" was, as I said over 20 years ago and no problems since.

I'm sure it will be a simple procedure to get it sorted and I'm sure once it's been "passed", she will be fine and home within a couple of days at the most.

Send her my love and hope she is well again soon. I was presented with mine in a small bottle, now I wonder what I did with it...........

Hi Kath, earlier this year my hubby had a kidney stone, and whereas usually he has a very high pain threshold, he couldn't keep still during an attack.
One of the treatments he was given, of which he still has a stock, is Voltarol suppositories,(sp), the active ingredient of which is Diclofenac Sodium BP.
When at hospital A&E, he was given Morphine, but back home whenever he felt an attack coming on, he used one of them each time, and literally within minutes things had calmed down.
I've just told him about your daughter, and she has his every sympathy! :-(
One thing Bob was told was DO NOT DRINK BOTTLED WATER, as it contains lots of calcium, which encourages the stones.

My OH had them when we lived in the sherry region of Spain,where the ground is white and chalky,so a lot of locals suffered with kidney stones.
He went to hospital several times,and one time had to stay in for a week,on a drip.and I had to have the next bed!
The doctor there would not laser or operate,as he wanted it to pass naturally,and every visit took an xray to check.
One day we were in a bar,talking to locals,and the conversation got round to kidney stones,and this young chap said"make an infusion of the plant horse's tail,and that will get rid"
Deciding to go to the herbalist,instead of searching in the fields,we went in and asked for horses tail.
The herbalist said"You've got kidney stones"and gave us a packet of the dried herbs to make an infusion.
Instead of just putting boiling water on the leaves,I decided to boil a litre of water in the pressure cooker with the herbs to get the most out of the concoction.
I strained the liquid into a jug,and made my OH drink a litre every day,which he wasn't very keen on,but he did persevere.
In just over a week his stone had gone,after over 2 years of occasional excruciating pain,so these home remedies do have their uses!
He has never had a problem since,but I still have some of this herb in the house!

Hi Kath,
Son had is kidney stones removed by laser 3 weeks ago and he went back to work next day. He was a bit sore but fine.
Now has to wait to get other side done in about 10 weeks.
Good luck to your daughter hope that she if fine very soon.
