My dear mum used to rock me to sleep with:
Sweetest little fellow, ev'rybody knows, don't know what to call him, but he's mighty like a rose.
Curly headed babbie, eyes a-shining blue, makes you think that Heaven, is coming down to you.
Aahh......

My friend would always sing
Where ere I go I take my Po and a little bit of last nights echo and when I've done I wipe my bum in a little bit of last nights echo
she taught it to all my children , it was quite embarrassing when they sang it in the middle of a crowded bus

My mam used to sing: I love a Lassie, a bonny bonny Lassie, She's as sweet as the heather in the dell She's as sweet as the heather, the bonny purple heather. Mary, my scotch bluebell
To me as a child, she sang it just as tunelessly to my 2 girls, the elder is called Heather so she always thought the song was about her.

Wow..................was reading through your songs when the words 'golden slumbers' came into my mind. Sat and thought about it a while, and think I have the words right, of what my mother used to sing to me.
Golden slumber kiss your eyes, Smiles await you when you rise. Sleep, pretty baby, Do not cry, And I'll sing you a lullaby.
Care you know not, Therefore sleep, While I o'er you watch do keep. Sleep, pretty darling, Do not cry, And I will sing a lullaby

I don't actually remember Mum singing to me only Dad and Nanna but I do remember that at bedtime she would say a poem which was...
The Sooteries are quiet now And Sooty's going to bed Upon his little pillow He lays his sleepy head But just before he goes to sleep He weaves a magic spell Magic! Magic! everyone And off to bed aswell! So if you're feeling sleepy And can't hold up your head It's Sooty's magic working So off you go to bed!
I love you Mum Gaynor :-) xxx

Carol in Dulwich, Oh how I remember "Little Boy you've had a busy day" "The little boy that Santa Claus forgot" There were a lot of sad songs then that always brought tears to my eyes, and they all went on verse after verse. The days long before TV,when I visited my gran and we sat in the firelight in her cosy living room, singing all the old songs. Anyone remember all the words for "Little Old Lady passing by,catching everyone's eye"
At New Year we would sing...."The log was burning brightly, twas a night that would banish all sin, for the bells were ringing the Old year out and the New Year in"
There were so many, and my gran knew all the words. Brenda x x

I remember this being sung when I was a child
MY CURLY HEADED BABY
Oh, my baby, my curly headed baby, We'll sit below the sky and sing a song to the moo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oon. Oh, my baby, my curly headed baby, Your daddy's in the cotton fields a-workin' late and soo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oon.
So lulla lulla lulla lulla bye bye Does you want the moon to play with Or the stars to run away with? They'll come if you don't cry. So lulla lulla lulla lulla bye bye In your mammy's arms be creepin' And soon you'll be a-sleepin' Lulla lulla lulla lulla lulla bye.
Oh, my baby, my curly headed baby, I'll sing you fast asleep and love you so as I sing. Oh, my baby, my curly headed baby, Just tuck your head like little bird beneath its mammy's wing.
Sung by Paul Robeson From the film 'Big Fella' (1937)

Don't ask me where this one came from!
Come, come, come! Remember you're a plum! Never start a-worrying if things look glum. No matter what the weather Plums will always stick together. Come, come, come; Remember - you're a plum!

Row him in your plaidie he's gone to wedge ba's And bantam cocks though weary Can still cock-a leerie-oh. It' was sung as a lullaby by my Mother's Granny to her . "when i was young & in my day I thought ] I'd go to sea, I climbed aborad a chinese junk that was bound for the Yellow Sea, A chinese duke came up to me He thought he was a swell, He said if I should tell a lie he'd put me on to boil He tumbled me right over And into the pot to boil And as the pot was boiling he was singing all the while "Oh atchy-batchy I J Jigoro Humbo salo lekkoo Sle sle sle I o come to the chinese super o."

My Children also liked this!
Me & Little Andy Late one cold and stormy night I heard a dog a’ barkin’ Then I thought I heard somebody at my door a’ knockin’ I wondered who could be outdide in such an awful storm Then I saw a little girl with a puppy in her arms Before I could say a word she said, ’my name is sandy And this here is my puppy dog, it’s name is little andy’ Standing in the bitter cold in just a ragged dress Then I asked her to come in and this is what she said
Chorus:
Ain’t ya got no gingerbread Ain’t ya got no candy Ain’t ya got an extra bed for me and little andy Patty cake and bakersman My mommy ran away again And we was all alone and didn’t know what else to do I wonder if you’ll let us stay with you
Giddy up trotty horse, going to the mill Can we stay all night If you don’t love us no one will I promise we won’t cry London bridge is fallin’ down My daddy’s drunk again in town And we was all alone and didn’t what we could do I wonder if you’ll let us stay with you
She was just a little girl, not more than six or seven But that night as they slept the angels took them both to heaven God knew little andy would be lonesome with her gone Now sandy and her puppy dog won’t ever be alone
Ain’t ya got no gingerbread Ain’t ya got no candy Ain’t ya got an extra bed for me and little (whispers) andy

My dear mum always sang this song to me and I passed it on to my children, they still ask me the lyrics, it's called
Little man, you've had a busy day
Evenin' breezes sighin', moon is in the sky Little man, it's time for bed Daddy's little hero is tired and wants to cry Now, come along and rest your weary head
Little man, you're cryin', I know why you're blue Someone took your kiddy-car away You better go to sleep now Little man, you've had a busy day
Johnny won your marbles, tell you what we'll do Dad'll get you new ones right away Better go to sleep now Little man, you've had a busy day
You've been playin' soldier, the battle has been won The enemy is out of sight Come along there soldier, put away your gun The war is over for tonight
Time to stop your schemin', time your day was through Can't you hear the bugle softly say Time you should be dreamin' Little man, you've had a busy day
Little man, you're cryin', I know why you're blue Someone took your kiddy-car away You better go to sleep now Little man, you've had a busy day
Johnny won your marbles, I know, I tell you what we'll do Dad'll get you new ones right away Better go to sleep now Little man, you've had a busy day
You've been playin' soldier, the battle has been won The enemy is out of sight Come along there soldier, put away your gun The war is over for tonight
Time to stop your schemin', time your day was through Can't you hear the bugle softly say Time you should be dreamin' Little man, you've had a busy day.
The other song mum sang was......He's the little boy that Santa Claus forgot, it used to make me so sad!
He's the little boy that Santa Claus forgot, And goodness knows, he didn't want a lot.
He sent a note to Santa For some soldiers and a drum, It broke his little heart When he found Santa hadn't come.
In the street he envies all those lucky boys, Then wanders home to last year's broken toys. I'm so sorry for that laddie, He hasn't got a daddy, The little boy that Santa Claus forgot.
Spoken: (You know, Christmas comes but once a year for every girl and boy, The laughter and the joy they find in each brand new toy. I'll tell you of a little boy that lives across the way... This little fella's Christmas is just another day. He's the little boy that Santa Claus forgot, And goodness knows, he didn't want a lot.)
In the street he envies all those lucky boys, Then wanders home to last year's broken toys. I'm so sorry for that laddie, He hasn't got a daddy, The little boy that Santa Claus forgot.
