Exactly - I have friends who are doctors - now they are consultants etc - bu they had to work on call 24 hours a day weekends, holidays etc.

No disrespect to those who would like to keep the Sabbath (if it is a Saturday or Sunday) if you had an emergency (I would hope not) but if you did like a fire, illness a break-in etc you would like someone to be working those days.

Jeanette - sorry about the name. Just holding to ransom may have been better.
Too much gun crime at the moment....

I don't think anybody on here is criticising what the medical and emergency services do, or farmers with their livestock and crops, etc. even the vicar! We know that in some jobs, there is no choice.

What the point here is, Sunday has now become just like any other day of the week, the shops are all open, money changes hands, and family values are slowly being eroded. Not by those who have to work due to the very nature of their jobs, but across all industry.

Hmmm I would like to say things were better when the shops didnt open on a Sunday..... but working full time - I find it quite useful.

Today I wanted to clear my garden and finish all the odd jobs before the heavy frost sets in.

Having just got back from B&Q because I ran out of teak oil and decided a new roll of turf was needed where I just moved my strawberry plants from...... I have to say I am for Sunday opening ..... but I think it should be optional for the staff to choose to work it (Maybe at a higher rate).

Jeanette - ok got the name wrong but as for gun crime you are very lucky.

As for the rest of your thread - why are you putting your area down?

I think it is a choice for us to go shopping on Sundays (Saturdays for others) but I do agree maybe there should be a pay scale for people who can choose to work therefore get paid a reasonable rate.

I agree that to a certain extent you can choose whether you work on a Sunday or not - my husband went into a different medical career path so that we would have weekends for our family life, but we still have to jealously guard that time.

I think services and that includes supermarkets, etc, being open on a Sunday does help those people in that service sector itself have a slightly easier life.

Shopping for 16 days because the 12 hour shift pattern would be outside 9-5 and the 11 hour break between each set of shifts (when they change the times) falling on a Sunday is no joke.

Looking at it like that, it makes sense to share out the days off, but that means sacrificing that feeling of almost the whole world being off on the one day.

I say almost because we didn't usually share in it.

I think you are right, you have to gear your life towards making your own best choice.

Just having a bit of fun. I would never put my area down....everybody knows that Yorkshire is the best county in Britain.....and anyone who says otherwise will get a slap with a wet haddock! lol

Shops are a business I spose coz other businesses were working 24/7 it was deemed to follow.

I worked shiftwork - ended up on allnight shift but that was the international telephone exchange overseas yet still a business.

I try not to shop on Sunday if I can help it.

Sitta Report 21 Oct 2007 16:20

May i say something here - it is no only Sunday that is a Holy day.

So we should not forget people who have to work on their own holy days.

I have worked in places where all religions where catered for - special diets, fasting etc so we cannot say Sunday is the day. Only some faiths have Sunday as the day.

I go to church on sunday and I also shop on sundays.
I find because of having panic attacks, the supermarket, woolies etc are usually less hectic plus OH is available to take me.
remember the Sabbath was made for man not man for the sabbath so its up to you whether or not you use it to rest or for leisure and you cant have a living relationship with God on just one day of the week it has to be everyday.

EB..wow, where do you live????? I avoid the shops on Sunday simply because it is by far the busiest day of the week! You have to que to get into the retail and multi-story car park...I have on occasion been food shopping on a Sunday morning and have found dozens of people lined up like vultures waiting for the doors to open.

Thankyou Teresa W you have explained the ultimate position clearly. Before supernmarkets there was always a corner shop open for the things that could not be bought at other times and despite the fact that women worked too there was never the need to devote a day, especially at weekends, to doing the weekly shop.

As for care workers, nurses and emergency services they have always been there but is it necessary to have doctor's surgeries open because 'the public' demand it ? I doubt that 'the public' do make such a demand save for a minority. If you are so ill that you cannot wait until the Monday to see a doc then there is always a GP somewhere on tap.

Prescriptions have been mentioned - Dunno where you live but I have always found a pharmacy open on a Sunday somewhere locally (in my case 'local' is with 6 miles) but in Greater London area usually there is a rota system at least.

the shop where I work has a lot of lonely old people as their customers and most of them tend to shop every day even on Sundays and when the weather is bad. It is just something to do for them to break the monotony of the day.

I dont normally work Sundays but I am amazed when I do as it really is the same people who shop every day even on a Sunday.
