It's Matthew Pinsent

Four-time Olympic gold medal-winner Matthew Pinsent researches his family tree, uncovering surprising links through his mother to several great characters in the shaping of British history. On his father's side, Matthew unearths a mystery surrounding his grandmother Kathleen's only brother George Macpherson, who died during the Battle of the Somme. Last in series

Winter Drawers Ever Near Report 18 Oct 2007 19:47

The newspaper today mentions that quite a lot of the previous people in the series found that their ancestors suffered extreme poverty.

His seems to be a bit different. Drugs, scandal and royalty are in his family tree. Hopefully it will be very interesting.

Poor George Macpherson, how sad. They were so young and to have that much responsibility... very sad.

Wow, not many of us can say we go back beyond the Magna Carta!

I did have to giggle when the scroll showed his direct descendency from God though lol

Yes Poor George MacPherson, poor lad. But doesn't it go to show the enormous sense of duty all those young men had, that the went through that?

That was the best one this series. How would you feel finding out you were related to royalty?

I've got one! My line leads back to Edward I via a different route.

Pity they programme showed the silly long scroll going back to mythology.

It is very possible to find royal ancestry (about 5% of the UK population are likely to be able to do so though many more are descended but can't prove it).

If they had gone into more detail they would have found a descent from Charlemagne via Matilda (wife of William the Conqueror) and then back as far as most genealogists believe is provable to Afranius Syragrius who was alive around 370 AD. No reliable documents survive to go further back.

Interesting programme this time I thought.

Wow! now that one was good. And he seemed genuinely pleased, unlike some of the others.

If that had been me I would have been floating on air for weeks, if not years.

I was flabbergasted when I found out Helen. I didn't believe it and had to double check everything.

I now know that millions of people share the same ancestry but it makes all history feel personal now.
