Well that's where I've been going wrong, digging out the posh little cups that go with saucers!

I bought a set of bathroom scales recently - I dont normally bother with weight - but wanted to weigh my suitcases to make sure I didnt go over the 20k rule.

As they were in the bathroom this morning I thought I would see how much I weighed....

Totally baffled and will resign them to the loft until I need to weigh my suitcases next time - there are no stones on them!

I can't make 'metric' pastry.
In my recipe, it is one teaspoon of water per ounce of flour, and it works, so why change it?

Oh, by the way, 12oz = 340g

Of course the american volumes are different to ours, one US gallon is equivalnt to approx 3.785 litres whereas ours imperial gallon is 4.546 litres. There are 16 cups to a US gallon, making 1 cup equal to 236 ml!

'They' really should wait till all the oldies are dead before making these changes. Having said that, here in NZ we have been metric for a long time now, but I still do dressmaking and a few other things in inches. And I dont usually refer to a 500gm of butter, it is still a 'pound' of butter to me. I just mark it in half if I want 8 ozs (actually it is a little over ) or quarter for 4 or in between for 2 or 6. Things still seem to turn out ok. I am now used to travelling kms. And putting litres of diesel in the fuel tank. And paying in $ and c.

And temps are now celcius, not fahrenheit, but I can do a conversion for those.
I sometimes wonder when they will try to metricate time and the calendar. Might be difficult.

Many thanks young Mr Keef! (Keith in Fujairah)
Thats lovely and clear to me now!...so...

If I take 3.785 litres of flour and mix in 16 cups of butter with 236 ml of salt, will that make my loaf?

LOL

Gerri (off to Tesco's to buy a loaf!)

Gerri it may make the loaf, but I would not like to try it lol.

PS we just buy a ready made bread mix and bung it in the breadmaker.

Same as Old Crow in NZ we have had metric for a long time now. I remember when I first came to Australia from England how hard it was trying to covert one to the other. I never think in Pounds and ounces now but I am afraid I still measure in Feet and inches. I usually get the ruler ot tape measure out when trying to convert.

Jackie
