On BBC's breakfast this morning they were saying that shop workers will soon be able to refuse to serve you with such things as alcohol and bacon on religious grounds.

It's absolute madness!

But it's their religious right Joan! ;-))))))

Similarly, they recounted a story of a doctor who refused to give somebody the morning after pill because it was against his religious beliefs!

i used to moan about the amount of smoke that came behind the bar at work even when i smoked myself (gave up 2 1/2 years ago)
the response was...
get another job then

these people have been working in the same enviroment for years handling bacon etc. without complaining and now just because some religious fanatic has decided its wrong they are going to refuse to do it
to these people i say what was said to me
Get another job
and if you are thinking about getting a job where you will be asked to do these things that may be against your beliefs the answer is
Dont go there

Hi Jessica

Self service check outs are all well and good if you only have a small amount of shopping to put through. They're not really practical when you've done a weekly or monthly shop.

And what about smaller shops where there may be only one or two poeple to serve you?

Exactly Sue! If you were a vegetarian you wouldn't apply for a job at a slaughter house and then expect to be excused from killing any animals! lol

I can see no reason why there should not be an aisle of Polish food.
Polish people live here and must miss their little delicacies.
My mother was a foreigner in this country during the war, and it was 1964 before she saw.. YOGHURT.... and 1967 before she saw an AUBERGINE.
I remember her excitement.

BUT, for anyone to serve in a shop in this country and disallow customers to buy
Alcohol..... because of THE religion they themselves follow.... well that is unacceptable.
We know that in their own countries they do not allow any foreigners to drink alcohol. AND they comply with their laws.

But there we are, they will probably get away with it, although I do agree...... SACK THEM.

Exactly Sue, there is no need for me to add, you have said it.....

I do wonder though who it is who thinks these ideas up......I am sure if you asked the staff, they would say it was just part of the job......thats the trouble with the British, to busy leaning over backwards to help and not offend, and this attitude does not help ethnic relations.....

On the checkouts at our local supermarket they have Muslim girls in habib.....can you imagine the chaos if they decided they would not put your bacon or pork through the scanner.....and would you double check sandwiches to see what filling they had....

I am sure the shops would sort it out if the customers left because of this silly attitude....

Hi Deanna and Billy's Mum

I don't see any problem with the Polish food either really, as long as other popular lines haven't had to go to accommodate them. Perhaps the local shop gets more Polish customers these days than those of other nationalities.

Sounds lovely Sue.
We had a beautiful Polish stall on our market at one time.... then the council decided that they were going to build on it.
The second time they have done that to us.
So now the market people have gone else where.
And Jeanette, I agree that other things may have been pushed aside to accommodate them. BUT our ASDA is quite good, it handles many ethnic foods, including Irish... which makes my Allan happy. ;-0)

this started because some muslims said the touching of alcohol, was against their religion.
However leading member of the muslim party have said this is not so, the Koran actually states that they must touch alcohol in a islamic state, last time i looked England wasn't an Islamic state.

I amy not have read that right but thats how i read it, so it looks like the newspapers are making a mountian out of a molehill as usual to me!!!

Apart from the obvious, can they serve you marshmallows as they contain pork, ready meals that contain alcohol & meat that hasn't been killed the "correct" way?
