What do you feel when you see them? Today I was given enlarged copies of pictures taken in 1891 of my G Grandma with her Mum and her Grandma!! she was born in 1823!!

I felt a link, looks which reminded me of my family and a sense of the circle of life...

Last week someone sent me a photo her my grandparents and my mother taken on the 1950's. For reasons I wont go into I havent owned a photograph or seen my mother for over 20 years.

Whilst my anger has not reduced with time, I felt sad I had destroyed all photo's many years ago when I was young and the lady whilst knowing we are estranged but not the circumstances was kind enough to send me photo's up to the late 60's when they lost contact.

I still have no desire to mend bridges - but am very greatful that part of my ansestry has been restored.

People are not born bad - they choose that path - she was innocent in these photo's and had then not taken the wrong path.

And I will always be greatful for them. More shocking was the resemblance. A photo was taken about 30 years later with the same people but me in the spot my mother stood - I am sure no one was aware when this was taken. Although everyone else has aged - I look the spit of my mother - I am not sure if thats a good or bad thing nervous laugh.

Christine I agree, genetics are so fascinating, seeing likenesses you never knew about before...

My husband has a photo of his grt grandfather & family
we were looking at his children one of the boys was the image of one of my sons despite the mode of dress the other could have been one of my grandchildren it was so strange.It made you feel so close to them

Last week I saw my great uncle Stan for the first time, (a photo of him I mean), he died in WW2 and I had never ever seen a picture of him, but his great grandaughter let me have that one.

I did cry, because he was so much like my dad in looks and build...dad was his nephew, and would have been 7 when he died. My Dad died 2 years ago.

The I saw a picture of his son and he is the double of my cousin!

Thanks Caz but things havent been difficult I chose to cut off and did - thats what emotional boxes are for.

But I was shocked and intregued by the photo's and am old enough to now see them for what they were and appreciate them without the anger I had many many years ago.

I have one photo that I am really drawn to Caz.it is of my Gt. Grandfather, Grandmother, my 3 y.o. Grandfather and baby sister....

They are dressed in their best clothes, my Gt. Granny in her black bombazine dress, my Gt. Grandfather in his suit and boots...my Grandad in his little velvet coat with lace collar....My Gt. Grandad looks so proud of his little family....they went on to have 3 more sons and 2 daughters....

I forgot to say that I look very much like my Grandad, and my Grandad and youngest son look so alike in their wedding photos....

so the apple does not fall far from the tree, in our case....

One my Grandad's brothers said of his parents....."i had a lovely Mum and Dad".....and to have your children say that of you, is just the best....

I have a gorgeous one of my Gt Granda Michael Gibson Kirk
He died in 1935.
He has such a twinkly face and a Jimy Edwards moustache, I love him to bits, just from his photo--is that daft or what?

Sorry.....it is the type of cheaper black shiny material that Victorian dresses were made out of....you could have a cotton one, bombazine or if you had money it would be silk or another fine material....

ALEPINE: (alapine, alpine) French word for Bombazine, dress material first made entirely of silk but later of silk and cotton.

I've got one of three generations on my mums side. My Grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather...my grandfather is about 3 and hadn't yet been 'breeched', he is in a little sailor suit and hat, with the cheekiest grin you ever saw.

just googled it an it is a mixture of silk and worsted or silk and cotton.......a bit like our poly-cotton mixtures today I suppose...

My cousin in Australia recently sent me a picture of my grandad who died in 1919.
It's the first one i've ever seen.
Now I know where I get my good looks from.

I love looking at old pictures, just sorry I havn't got more of them. But dad keeps finding new ones, so I am hoping he still has a little box somewhere with more piccies !!!

For many years we have had a photo of someone my late father called his 'Mad Aunt', as children we thought she looked really scary!

I don't think she looks so scary now, good thing, because I see her every time I look in the mirror!

It's not funny!

Well I have a quite newly found a photo of my great gran and three of her daughters and two of their children.
It has pride of place, love it, so many similarities when it comes to features. Not making them our features if you know what I mean. Real similarities.
Have a photo of my dad's half sister and it is me! So strange, she died in 1969. My uncle was emotional when he showed it to my family because of the likeness and my little boy said, '' Why are you in black and white Mummy?''
My life and hers so far in many ways have been far too similar. Just hope I don't end my days as young as she was.

i have an old picture of my dad as a little boy aged abt 4-5, and a picture of my son of abt the same age and the resemblence is so uncanny!! they have the exact same expression on there faces! except the hair is a different style----dads looks as tho his mum [my nan] has put a bowl on his head and cut round it!!!!

i am always compairing those 2 photos---even one of dad aged 18, i can see my son in him! he's 30 now.

when my son is doing any handywork like decorating or something like that i can see dad in him, cos my son is a perfectionist just like dad was!

think he's come back to look after me or keep an eye on me!LOL
