I also remember sitting in front of it first thing in the morning trying to light it before I got the children up! ;-0(

No thank you, I would not like a coal fire back.

I have to say too that we had 'frost on the inside of the windows'.... draughts all over the house, no heating in the bathroom....... such luxury I could do without now.

I remember Mum and I toasting bread by the fire....and it was my job when Mum and Dad were at work to clear the ashes and relight the fire for them coming home.....blackleading the grate and red cardinal on the hearthstone....

I have to make do with a gas flame one now....

They are lovely aren't they? So cosy, and comforting. But I have been cursed with two of my own... and I was the one who had to clean, light, collect coal from bunker etc, and the kids would sit huddled in front of the full glory of it!! Along with German Shepherd Labrador and any cats that had made their home with us at the time, lol.

I never got a look-in!!

all sounds lovely, i have a arifical one too but its not the same is it,
i remember my nam had corn beef legs from siting with her legs in front of the fire she never seemed to burn
and one time my mum through her heated rollers in the fire , there was something in them that made them spark like made and it looked like firework night in there living room, they were hiding behind the settee could of been nasty lol.

Oh yes Puss the bread was lovely and thick....
we have multi grain now, a beautiful bread but not the same as white toasted!!

Still, the central heating in the house is just how I like it..... and how OH hates it!!

i once cooed some meat and veg over ours once when i lived in the sticks and we had a power cut cause a blob of snow fell on the power cable

Deanna

Deanna Report 19 Sep 2007 17:37

Oh yes and they were great for getting rid of veg peelings and anything else which would fill the dust bin.

I've had to boil the kettle and make toast and boil eggs on it.... lucky to have it then!
