Teresa, I take your point, but having watched some police chases where the escapees go the wrong way round roundabouts, it IS understandable for them to go the whole hog and disappear down the exit lane.......

how often does the police commentary say.." The best thing is to keep them on the Motorway"

Bob, to me that strengthens the case for more stringent tests for drivers over 70 to be honest. But thats another discussion.

I dont believe for one moment that the police forced the driver onto the motorway the wrong way. In fact they were at pains to point out that they actually stopped chasing them at the junction. However the drivers apparently continued for over a mile, before crashing, presumably head on with the other vehicle.

First, why didn't they use the hard shoulder, surely they KNEW they were on the wrong carrageway, second they were no longer being chased, and third, did they not see the headlights of the oncoming car? It was in the early hours of the morning. OR were they too drugged/drunk to know what they were doing?

How are the police to blame?

I believe that police chases aside, it is sometimes TOO easy for someone to get disorientated and get onto a carriageway going in the wrong direction.........junctions should be made/built foolproof so that it is virtually impossible to do the wrong thing.
I refer to cases where older drivers or foreigners have got onto motorways, incorrectly.....

Dont run away with the idea or that I think no ones personal property is not important that I support criminal activity I dont !!,,,but there must be an easier way for police to catch these people,,,,,,we have all watched it on cime tv,,,,,the driver is happily driving along in what is often a stolen car or been involved in criminal dealings till a police car takes chase sirens going then they up their speed,to dangerous levels,,,,which is a recipe for fatal accidents to innecent bystanders,,,,,,why cant they radio for support ahead to road block a car.

At least two of those who died in this lived near me. The driver of the car being chased was 18, and his uncle has stated that the lads should have stopped for the police. There were three in the wrong way car killed, a fourth is seriously injured. They were in the wrong. They knew what they were doing. Local tom toms say that they are known for it. While I feel desperately sorry that anyone died so needlessly, I reserve my shall we just call it unreserverd sympathy for the couple coming back from holiday, driving correctly, who are the totally innocent victims in this.

Any survivors of a so-called joyriding incident should be done for manslaughter at the very least. It makes me so cross.

Ooooh don't get me started onthe human rights brigade and their reletless defence of criminals. They seem to forget the rights of the victims which should always be paramount.

Absolutely Mo.........most of the joy-riders are 18 and under.

I would hate to see a fully armed police force.

I can't help thinking that the courts are the ones letting us all down.

The laws are there, as are the punishments, but the courts and the human rights lobby seem to get in the way of sentencing criminals.

Agree on those points Kitty..............and I can't defend and say that using guns reduces crimes as it doesn't .......... but I do think we need a tougher stance..............but don't know the answer

If you notice, though in the USA as well as all police being armed, the roads are wider, quieter and there are a huge number of places to safely bump a car to force it off the road.

Here, it would almost certainly cause severe damage to property and maybe innocent bystanders too.

A different situation altogether in my opinion anyway.

So Kay, if your car had been stolen, maybe with some belongings in it, would you not report it to the police in case they saw it and chased it?

Or having reported it, and finding out they had seen it, but lost it because they did not chase it, wouldn't you question that, asking why they did nothing to get your car back?

I actually believe that some of these joy riders, bank robbers, drug dealers or whoever is using the car actually enjoy the thrill of being chased. They think they are infallible and drive like idiots, attracting attention.

Would you feel the same if say, a dealer was caught on the street, a cop chased him on foot, and without thinking, the dealer runs into the path of an oncoming bus and is killed? Would you still say, the cop should no have given chase?

They perhaps should do like the police in the USA.

Bump the car to cause it to crash then shoot the driver it he tries to escape.
