There is mention on here about morphine not being addictive. This is misleading, as it may be addictive, particularly if taken over long periods of time or by someone who has had previous addiction to drugs.

You may have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when you stop using this medication after using it over a long period of time. Do not stop using morphine suddenly without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely.

This said it is safe to use if treated with respect, strictly as prescribed, and by the person for whom it was prescribed only.

Hi all,
My partner has been on Oramorph (Oral morphine) for the last year with no particular bad side effects. He is also using Fentanyl patched which also have morphine in (absobed through the skin like nicotine patches).
Main side effects are vivid dreams, dry mouth and occasional dizzyness.
As mentioned previously if morphine is taken for pain in the correct dose it is not addictive and does not prevent you carrying out normal day to day tasks. As per the instructions do not drink alcohol as it is an opiod.
Do not be afraid of taking this drug as it is highly effective and your doctor will keep a close eye on your usage.
Hope it works for you.

i also have been prescribed "tramadol" and paracetamol, both to be taken to-gether, and yes one will take the pain away and the other .....well you dont care less!!!

Yes, you're right it is heroin. As it's a controlled substance that's why they entered it in the drugs register.

We had company the other night so I wasn't concentrating properly and I took 2 morphine and 1 paracetamol instead of the other way round. Hey, that was good. And it was the best night's sleep I've had in ages :))

Yes I have had diamorphine in hospital. Made me feel whoozy - like I was tipsy. I also found it suppressed my breathing - so maybe it was lack of oxygen that caused the drunken feeling??

I had it for severe pain from a spinal problem, so it may have been a high dose...I know it had to be entered into a book every time they gave it to me (not just on my notes).

It's heroin isn't it?

Joyce I had it after an operation... but.

I also had it at home for the relief of pain from an infected gall bladder.

I had antibiotics, and morphine in tablet form. I had to put it under my tongue... it seems that is the fastest route.... or so the Doctor told me.
I felt no pain in my body..... but I had a headache the whole time.

I'm not too sure if one thing had anything to do with the other, as I had Temporal Arteritis too.

Just take take it Joyce, you don't have it for nothing.

Hi Joyce,
All medicines CAN (not shouting just emphasising)have side effects for SOME people......even Paracetamol.
More than likely you'll be fine, especially as you've built up to it.
Try it and see....don't be in pain unecessarily, and if it doesn't suit for some reason get back to the doc for an alternative.

Love,
Alfie xx.

I'm on morphine at the moment for chronic sciatica. It is making me sleepy and I have to grab a couple of hours during the day. I'm on 10mg 4 times a day.

My husband was on it last year when he had his gallbladder out.

Both last year and this week the doctors explained that as long as it is being used to treat pain it is not addictive. It is when you use it without any pain for it to treat that you get addicted to it.

My g.granddaughter aged 5 has been on morphine this week. She fell off the rim of the netted trampoline, trying to take a photo of her sister, who pushed her.Consequently she broke her arm in 2 places and displaced her wrist,so in hospital for 3 days and an operation.
She had morphine for 2 days, and it did make her sleepy, but eased the pain.
I think that if it eases your pain it will be worth it,even if it does make you a bit sleepy.
I do hope it helps you,and let's face it ,morphine has been used for years so it must be safe!

Keep up the fight and stay positive.
Will be thinking of you.
Love Brenda

As you take Tramadol anyway it will be a bit like the effects of that only stronger.

As I have low blood presssure I can only have very small doses of morphine (shame cos I understand it's very effective...lol)

Good luck and be pain free!
