13th of August 1964. Peter Anthony Allen (at Walton Prison Liverpool) and Gwynne Owen Evans - real name John Robson Walby, (at Strangeways Prison Manchester) become the last to be hanged. The executions taking place simultaneously at 8.00 a.m. 15th of August 1963. The last hanging in Scotland was that of 21 year old Henry Burnett, who was executed at Craiginches Prison in Aberdeen for the murder of seaman Thomas Guyan. 1st of November 1965. Last passing of the death sentence in England - on David Chapman at Leeds. He was subsequently reprieved and his sentence commuted to life in prison. 8th of November 1965. Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act passed which effectively abolished capital punishment but provided for another vote on it 'within 5 years.' Treason, piracy with violence and arson in Royal Dockyards remained capital crimes. December 1969. Parliament confirmed abolition of capital punishment for murder.

No Catherine, no mention of your Dad! Both Albert, his uncle and his Dad were hangmen. I have to say they all sound a bit strange. None seem to have had a happy old age. Love and light Billy

yes apparently according to my family he did knock my dad down would love to find out more though my dad was called george arnold catherine xx

Catherine, did he really knock your dad down in a car?? Was he badly hirt? I rememeber vividly the court case and the hanging of Ruth Ellis I must have been 15/16 prthaps. My father kept saying that they would never hang her....in this day and age!! Deanna X

people I am not joking here my dad was involved in a car accident when he was young- the name of the person involved was Albert Pierrepoint, who we found out after to be the last hang man of england my family must have been well spooked catherine xxx

He was a hangman so was his uncle so was his nephew he got £10.00 each hanging he was also a green grocer and his wife never even knew he was a hangman until the later years of his life he hung over 600 people yet the funny thing is he never even agreed with the death penilty.

There's a DVD about him too. ('Pierrepoint') Probably done from a slightly different angle. It made me feel quite sorry for him. I had the impression that he didn't enjoy his job, but just did it to follow his father. Alf.

Albert visited Ruth Ellis.s grave after the execution and also spoke to her parents , he came across as a kind , understanding and very caring man . He said he had a job to do and was not there to judge the people he executed , his main concern was to get it right and release them from this life with dignity and respect .xxx Kim xxx

your spot on there kim Ruth Eliis was the last person to be hung, my dad was born 1937, so I am not sure what year he got knocked down, but I have always known about this for years, I mean he must have stopped and sorted it out, cos me dad was fine, be intresting to find out more though. catherine xx

There was a program on sky about him . Was he the last hangman in England ? He only ever talked about his work to one friend and said the hardest job he ever had was hanging Ruth Ellis . ( think this is right ) xxx Kim
