Hi Germaine
I have been following your thread.
I was in a similar situation a year or so ago. The house where my dad grew up was on the market and had an open day.
My husband and I went along and initially acted as though we were serious buyers.
It was fantastic to look at every room and imagine my dad living there as a boy etc. Eventually we told the estate agent the truth and he was fascinated. He completely understood why we had come to have a look around and was interested to hear the history we could give him.

I wouldn't have missed it for the world and now have that memory to treasure as well as the brochure!
I would definitely recommend going to view the house if you can, couldn't you ask a friend to go with you?

Yes Linda.
It is lovely to have a picture of the lady who owned it sat out side in the early 1900's and now a picture of how it is almost 100 years later.
Oh and a picure of my G G Grandparents sat there too.

Liz will see if I can pluck up the courage but I bet I don't . Nice to have the pictures though.

Oh and Colin from Hampshire blew a couple up for me they are great.
Wasn't that nice of him.

No Germaine, I mean phone now you have the brochure and ask if you can tag onto the end of a viewing if the agent is the one showing folk round, I am sure he/she wouldn't mind an extra 5 mins and might be interested to hear of any history you can tell, to pass on to prospective purchaser.
Go on, deep breath and phone!

Well that is something to treasure Germaine. Why not phone and ask to look round, you won't have to face them if they say no, and you still have the brochure. You could ask to go at the end of a real viewing so the agent was still there, I am sure they wouldn't mind a quick ten mins on the end of the viewing. Good Luck, Liz

Well I bottled out when I got there. Didn't ask to go and look but did ask for the picture when it was done with. Oh they said why not take a brochure. I said if you don't mind didn't like to ask with no intention of buying. Boy what a brochure not the ususal peice of A4. Lovley glossy brochure with loads of pictures in it. So very pleased. Last year I was taken to my great grand parents old house. How I would have loved to have gone in there. It reminded me of the house in Hansel and Gretal. It was in crieff and I dont understand why they sold that and moved into Glasgow.

Oh Janice that would be good. Don't know any of our lot that live nearer enough. Hi Caz had their name on the houses . They must have had a few bob too. This one is named after something to do with my G G Aunts husband he was a Swedish Captain or something. No sure if it wasn't where he came from or not. Not been able to find that out yet. But his father was a cigar manufacturer. Germaine x

Just had a thought. Why don't you pop into the estate agents and tell them who built the house. Ask them to contact the owners to see if they would mind you visiting with your old photo. Janice

Janice Report 16 Aug 2007 12:39

Wish I lived nearer you then - I'd come with you!! What about some our Lancashire lot on here - someone must be up for it! Go for it while you've got the opportunity! Janice

Germaine Report 16 Aug 2007 12:36

Oh never thought of that but don't think I have the nerve. I know no one would go with me so I would't dare go and ask on my own. Will just have to win the lotto.:-)) It is fab isn't it. I remember my Nana saying that when they used to go and visit it seemed so far away now it is only a few minutes on the bus from the top of our street. Germaine x

Oh WOW! Why don't you take your 1913 picture along and ask if they mind you taking a photo now. They might offer to show you round if you say it was built by someone in your family. It has to be worth a try!! Janice
