Rose, as i said on the suggestions board the facility works the same as a word search so every thread that has a surname or place name is listed as a discussion,

That's a good point about Martyn's surname being the same as one of the words used in this thread. I have just tried out Advanced Search and there is no option to make your search case-sensitive as in upper-case (=capital letters). If there had been, then Martyn would have been able to search just for Cross and not cross.

When you search a Word Document or an Adobe Document for a particular word (I use CTRL + F for this) you can ask for 'Match Case' so that it only looks for Castle not castle or Green not green etc. (I use this shortcut when I open up a census record that has loads of entries on it and I am only looking for one person).

Please can we have a Match Case option GR? :-D

then note the results,

then click on the discussions on the home page, they will return the same results/threads

use your own surname or birth place

In that case I am surprised that this is the only thread that brought up the result "cross"
That is a really good idea Sue but only works if people input the information correctly in the first place with upper and lower case letters

Errol, loads of threads have been brought up that way on all boards but most don't understand why and just point out the age of the thread

I am lucky then to only have names that don't 'cross over'...but if your surname was Gordon you would presumably get threads re Gordon Higlanders, Gordon Brown, Gordon the gopher... doesn't bear thinking about for the poor people whose surname is Rose :-0

Oh wow. I did as you suggested, Porkie Pie, typed 'cross' into 'Quick Search,' chose a post at random to open, used ctrl+f to find 'cross' and got 'to cross the Mersey'! How did it know my birthplace without me telling it?? Tell me the answer to that one! ;-)

Martyn it has nothing at all to do with genealogy..but this is the General Chat board..we dont' tend to talk much about genealogy on here :-D

It may be an old thread but it still has some valid points!


An annual charity bike rides comes through our area on this Sunday each year. They use a lot of main roads which are still carrying traffic - I know this because I have encountered them many times and did so this morning.....

I have no problem with this ride at all.......except.....


When the amateur cyclists stray all over the road regardless of cars and the dangers involved.


When the cyclists are riding 4-5-6 abreast and traffic can neither get up nor down the road, causing a lot of frustration.


When the 'wardens' take absolutely no notice of what is going on.

and finally,


When participating cyclists are caught using a graveyard and a school playground as a toilet.


It's just not on and gives the other cyclists a bad name.
