Well done Jane. I also was a very heavy smoker. 30 a day. Gave up some years ago now. I used to run out of puff just running upstairs, at 30 years of age. Now i can bolt up stairs at 56. and still run a mile to boot. Tony Oz

hi there Jayne, good for you to quit smoking. I tried a couple of years ago to quit but it didn't come to much. I'm now seriously considering having another go and sticking to it.

Well done Jayne. I'm off to buy the Alan Carr book at lunch time. I really want to stop but don't have much willpower. I have done a few surveys and I am an emotional and social smoker with low addiction levels so I should be able to do it. The Alan Carr book has been highly recommended so I'm going to give it a go. I don't have a craving, just couldn't promise I'd never have another one ever! (I did that before in the past, more than once, and broke that promise!.) Joy PS a kind ambulanceman gave me one after a car crash the year before last - he'd said is there anything you want? and I said I'd love a cigarette ........ but I didn't smoke it!!!

Julie

Julie Report 23 Feb 2005 09:42

Hi Joy, My Dad quit in 1979. He was 66 years old, and the doctor told him if he didn't quit he would be dead in 6 months because of bronchitis etc. He came home and threw his cigs in the bin there and then. He never smoked again from that day till he passed away in 2001 (from something totally unrelated). He always said that up until just before he died that he could have ripped your arm off for a cig! He never did smoke though, and I believe it certainly prolonged his life somewhat. He was 87 when he died. So although the craving never does go away completely, don't give in!! Well done! Julie

Jane Report 22 Feb 2005 21:24

Well done from one Jane to another Jayne I had my last one in May 2002. I never thiught I would be able to stop but I actually found it easier than I ever thought it would be. I used patches but say to anyone it doesn't matter what method you use as long as it works. Take it a day at a time. The longer you go the more you will want to carry on as a non-smoker. Well done!

And dont forget to keep patting yourself on the back Jayne. It is the best thing you can do for yourself, so make sure you are very nice to you! I gave up three years ago and have never looked back. Good luck. BC
