The male frog hangs on to the female frog to stop rival males getting to her. Sometimes there are so many males trying to hang on to the mama frog that she drowns. The frog hangs on until the female releases the eggs which is when he does his bit. Every other male frog croaks at the male frog as it passes and if the rival has a deeper croak the frog that is hanging on relinquishes his position fearing harm from the possibly 'bigger' frog. It pays to have a deep voice. Amazing what you can gleen from watching programmes about frog sex. Louise |

Brian, It's amazing what my husband tells me whilst I'm on here. He's a biology teacher with a brain that retains everything, I wish he'd go on Who wants to be a millionaire?' He's just told me that aparently there was a famous Italian scientist who dressed frogs in waterproof breeches to prove that it was sperm that fertilised the eggs. Isn't that wacky? Louise |

See Ali McB's thread; the story appears to have hopped over to that one. |

my mum and dad have a pond in their garden and there must have been around 25 frogs in there this year. Some of them have started to leave now and theres loads of frog spawn, the grandkids think its great they keep watch on the pond from the minute the frogs first appear to the time they watch the little froglets jumping around the lawn. Its a good talking point , everyone who comes to visit has to have a look and see what stage there at . lol. Deb X |
