To a rellie in my mum's line who died in Kent in 1533. It is highly likely that he was born in the same century although possibly in the 1400s. I often wonder what he looked like, how he behaved, what he had for breakfast and what it was like to be alive then. Having read English Social History, I am aware that 'Merrie England' was anything but merry. Len

1756 with help from an online parish clerk. I have some pencilled in people in the 1770s and 80s, but as these are reliant on parish registers I am not 100% certain. I do have all my great-great-grandparents but one (as his child was illegitimate he isn't named on her birth cert, so I may never find out!) nell

Bendy I too am stuck in Wales with my spearside. What with their patronymic system and that they only seem to have about 10 surnames between them - not to mention my male ancestors deliberately choosing mates from the Jones clan to make things difficult for me - it gets hopeless when one has to delve into parish records. Got back to 1735 on my mum's dad's side, but only just got mum's grandparents marriage certificate 1913 Dublin. 2 of their parents names on that, but nothing else. I can tell the Irish side is going to be bbblinkin difficult! Just like all the other people trying to find their Irish rellies!! It's driving my mum nuts!

Most of you have been extremley busy and lucky to have got back so far. Len- that book of yours, English Social History is very helpful in trying to obtain an insight on how people lived at certain times. ( I have it as well) I also have a large book on costume for the different classes. Coupled together these books give us a very good idea of what our ancestors looked like and what they did. Jo.

Back to 1600-ish on one line but through not much effort on my part - it was virtually handed to me on a plate - on other lines (especially the Irish one) I'm barely earlier than the 20th century! One day ....................... !!! Bev
