I acted on impulse yesterday and talked(ok nagged) my hubby into going on holiday to spain in October along with 10 other members of my family, only trouble is I m scared of flying and took the opportunity of this family holiday to test my phobia, thinking being.....If the plane goes down at least I ll be with my mum. Has anyone else got this phobia and did you overcome it? Any tips on keeping calm? I am now worrying about it even though its 5 months away, I have never flown before as we drive to our destinations (fine by me but unfair for hubby who does all the driving as we holiday in the south of France) Any advice greatly welcomed.

what are you actually afraid of? I feel safer in a plane than I do on the motorways of Britain. There is somewhere you can write to where you get help over your fears, i don't know the address but i think it is one of the big airports. someone on here may know. It is easy to say here is nothing to be afraid of but there isn't and it is a short flight. having said that irealise that fear is not rational and you probably need proper help to face your phobia. is ther anything on the net if you google 'flying phobia'? My hubby will tell anyone, i hate flying. Its the take off and landing i fear. I went to Thailand alone this year, i had to do the take off bit alone, i did it....cant say i enjoyed it, but i did it and i was so proud of myself. Have to say, when i thought about it, it wasnt as hard as i expected. Just think of your holiday at the end of that flight maybe? Good luck. Donna

Penny don't be afraid. My hubby makes the brakes for planes and he has no horror stories not one! Not at all in the factory everything is perfectly made and all the staff are really conscientious absolutely nothing to fear!!! Julie xxx

I hate flying too. Terrifies me, but I make myself do it or I would never see anything of the world. A friend of mine explained to the steward that she was extremely nervous and before the flight, he took her to the cockpit and the pilot showed her all the hi-tech instruments and fail safe devices ect. She felt much better. Perhaps you should ask. Claire xx

Seriously Penny I have flown many times I think it is natural to feel a bit nervous especially on take off and landing sure you will be fine safer than riding a bike! Love Davex

As easy as riding a bike.....have you seen me ride a bike. I know its hard for some to understand a flying phobia when your ok at flying yourself but I really do have a phobia, and i think it will need proffessional help or my kids and myself will never see much of the world. I don t know why I m afraid of flying but I ve been like it since being a child.

Okay I am sorry and do feel chastised... Flying is fab though, sitting by the window and looking down on the clouds there is no feeling like it in this world and you are statistically safer up there than down here. For take off an landing suck boiled sweets. As for the rest sit back and enjoy... Really really really sorry for earlier comment. Julie xxx
