I have had a mole in my garden for at least two years now - he came to visit just after me and my Hubby had relandscaped it and never left. I have tried everything I can think of - Ultrasonic Mole Deterrent that he burrows right past (must be deaf), Humane Trap that he burrows into and then straight back out of (even though he's not supposed to be able to get back out), Non-Humane Trap that he just kicks to one side or burrows around and lastly we tried to flush him out - hose pipe down one of the burrows for about an hour, he went on his hols for about a week and a half and came back when it had all dried out! It is driving my Husband mad - he even goes out on 'Mole Watch' with his lump hamer when it gets dark - I got some pics of him sat on an upturned bucket, hammer in hand, waiting for the little blighter. He's sat out there for hours on end, but is never quick enough! Has anyone got any ideas on how to get rid of this clever little visitor? I have to do something before the Men in white coats come to take my Husband away LOL!! Any ideas will be tried - promise. Kaye x

Kaye, I would also be grateful for responses, we have the same problem. Hubby is sooooo mad, the little blighter is picking a different patch every time. We have even tried flushing it out with the hose pipe...

we had moles, and found that a plastic windmill thingy did the trick. :-) Joy

Hi Joy - thanks for the suggestion, we will give it a go, but surely it's the same principle as the mole deterrent which he actually seems to like! But I will try it - before Hubby goes completely mad and digs up the entire garden! Will let you know if it works. Thanks Kaye x

Just been chating to next door, they had their garden dug up and laid wire mesh down then had it turfed just to stop the moles... extreme and costly but it worked.

Good last resort Joanne, but not one I would consider right now - I've only just got the garden looking nice, I don't want to dig it up again! It cost me my back last time too, so will try some alternatives first. Thanks Kaye x

Kaye, according to Jasper Carrott, there's only one way to get rid of a mole. Blow it's bl......dy head off!!!!!!!!!

Hi Kaye, we had this problem a couple of years back and only one thing worked. I know this will upset the eco people and the animal rights people but, on the advice of another local (we live in the darkest countryside) we stuck a hosepipe into a mole hill and poured water down it for nearly THREE DAYS and that was the last molehill we had. Don't get me wrong, I have cats, dogs, ducks, hens, geese, a pony, a hamster, a terrapin and I love animals to bits. I've seen moles the cats have caught and they are tiny and cute. However, what's left of my garden is for me and I needed to be firm. And if Moley moves back in from the field next door I shall do the same.

We didn't try the mole deterrent (didn't know about it!), but someone suggested a plastic windmill, and it worked which was brilliant! :-) Joy

Vivienne that's exactly what I thought as soon as I saw this thread! LOL I'm sorry I can't help with the mole situation but if it would help I can lend out four cats. Julie xxx

Thanks everyone for the replies....Vivienne I know the Jasper Carrott sketch you mean - someone lent it to my Hubby for a laugh - it is sooo funny and absolutely spot on. Perhaps I should buy Hubby a 12 bore shotgun BOOM!!! LOLLOLLOL Helen in Kent - You must have really upset the little fella flooding his home for 3 days, worth a go! Chris - I like the sticks idea, ours isn't a very large garden (you can imagine the mess he makes) so this would work. Have to admit that once he's found, he's a gonner! Chris Black - We thought about getting a Mole Catcher in, but were worried he would use poison and we have two very nosey dogs. Julie (littlejewels) - I didn't think Cats would catch moles, they've got extremely sharp claws and teeth, your cats must be very good? Unfortunatley, my dogs don't like cats very much - would tear up the garden even more! I will try some of these suggestions and let you know if any of them work - I hope they do. I'm glad I entertained you all, I too can see the funny side - just don't tell Hubby!! Thanks Kaye x

Had moles for ages, garden was begining to sink. We had tried everything, including most listed here, then someone suggested mothballs, the good old fashioned sort. Took some finding, put one down some of the hills, have never seen a mole since. Jo

Hi Jo Jo - I think I've heard that somewhere before, but didn't really think it would work. I will give it a try. I hope I haven't got a mole liike Jasper Carrott had - he tried Garlic and the Mole just ate it and carried on as normal! I would just like to add, before I upset someone, that I never wanted to kill the Mole - not initially - I'm actually very pro Animal Rights and would never condone cruelty. However, this Mole has taken things too far - we've tried the humane methods, but he just won't go - No more Mister Nice Guy from now on! Kaye x

Can someone please explain the windmill thingy as I am thinking all sorts of things. We don't have moles over but I do know that than can cause havoc to your garden so please don't send tham over here like you did the convicts we can do without them Thank you.LOL Love Cilla.

Joy

Joy Report 27 May 2005 09:38

Cilla, it is a coloured plastic stick, with something plastic on the top of it, sometimes a big smiley flower. I really am not very good at explaining things, sorry! (doh, why I called it a windmill I don't know!) anyway, having this one in the garden kept the moles from disrupting the garden, so hope it will work for others. :-) Joy

Phoenix Report 27 May 2005 10:30

I would just like to say that I am very sorry if I have upset anyone - I know it seems cruel to want to kill the mole, but when it's been tearing up your beautiful garden that you have only recently spent thousand of pounds getting decent, then it becomes a different matter!! I didn't want to kill it to begin with and wouldn't let my Husband use a trap that would kill it, but the Humane methods just haven't worked so far. I will try all the Humane methods suggested here before I try out the non Humane ones - I really would prefer it if he just decided it wasn't worth sticking around anymore. As someone else pointed out - we have this cute, cuddly image of them when they are infact quite vicious. You only get one mole in your garden at a time because they are so territorial and will fight another to the death, they have huge sharp claws and sharp teeth and if you picked one up without protective gloves it would have your fingers off! I have read stories of moles undermining foundations of walls and patios, not just messing up gardens - this is dangerous, not to mention expensive. He has to go. I will keep you updated and let you know what works. Thanks for all the suggestions - I'm going to have a busy weekend. Kaye x
