Got locked into my old flat one day. Living by self with a 2 yrold i used to double lock the door at night for safety. get up one morning to meet my sister at the hospital for her daughters scan ( she didn't wanna be alone in case it was bad news) Only to find i couldn't opne the lock!!!! I had no fone and it was pre mobile days!!!!! I tried banging on the wall for neighbour i even jumped up and down in sitting room hoping downstair neighbour would come and tell me to shut up. Nothing. In the end i had to scream out of window to a passer by who kindly came up and open the door from the outside!!!! In the same flat...... I managed to drop my keys justoutside on the way out. We went to the pub and had a couple came home. NO keys... assume i've left them in the pub, So we rush back to the pub and in our rush to get there before closing Dean clips the kerb giving us a flat tyre. So we had to wait at teh pub for BIL in come and resuce us cos of course the spare was flat!!! OH and by the way the key weren't in the pub. So we're stuck outside the flat, can't even get into the hall as it's entry phone. it was late so we had no idea who to call. In end we went to police station but they had closed at 11pm. We called locksmiths but all wanted in the region of £200, which we didn't have. I'm starting to panic as Kerry was only3 and the twins under 6 mths. In the end i went back to the police station and used the emergenct phone outside and sobbed down teh phone about being a stranded witht eh kids etc etc. Two very burly policeman came to the flat and with one swift kick the door opened!!!!! And of course when i went to the station the next day on the of chance my keys had been handed in......... they had been. So if the station had been open all the stress/bother etc could've been sawed Have been locked out of this house too, but a long stick enabled us to reach latch and flick it open, worrying how easy it was!!!! But we now have new front door that doesn't lock unless you turn the key!!! |

Hi Margaret. Never locked myself out, but I have locked my partner in. I had his keys in my handbag one morning as he told me the night before to put them in bag when we were out. So the next morning, I had locked the patio and front door and he was locked in all day, could even open a window for fresh air LOL, so he sat there all day watching TV until i came home from work. Gosh Daisy...you have just reminded me....probably wanted to forget....felt such a bad mother.... When my oldest daughter was a baby she was fast asleep indoors and I just popped out the back to put some washing on the line....the door slammed behind me and I had no key. I had to find a neighbour who kindly came to my aid...he had to open the back window (to this day I don't know how!!!) which I know was locked!!!! Happy ending though after about 1 1/2 hrs....she was still asleep and non the wiser....I was, however, wiser that is!! Jacquie xxx |

I0 years ago I locked Ellie in the car quite by accident when she was a baby. We were parked right outside the chemist in the village and rather than get her out of her baby seat I left her in the car and went in to pick up a prescription. Not thinking, I automatically pushed down the door lock and closed the door, forgetting that all the other locks were down and my keys were still in the ignition. Very old car by the way!!! No windows open and an extremely hot August day so as you can imagine I was panicking somewhat. The chemist rang for the police to come and help unlock the car and someone else ran to a nearby petrol station to ask if anyone could help as we didn't know when or if the police would come. Within 3 minutes a policeman had arrived just in time to see a rather helpful young lad scuttle away with a coat hanger having successfully opened my car in less than 10 seconds. The policeman bless him said 'I don't think I want to know how he did that!' Daisy |

My husband locked me in once... my house keys were out in the car and he went out and locked the front door.. my back door was open so i went through into my neighbours back yard (we live in a terrace) but her 8ft gate was locked, i could see her and hubby who are both over 90yrs sat in the dinning room, he is blind and deaf and she is hard of hearing and was sat with her back to me.. i spend almost an hour banging on her door and window but to no avail. I had to ring my friends hubby who is a plod to come and rescue me... i put the keys for the car out of the window and he went and got my house keys for me.. they thought for ages my hubby had 'locked' me to stop me going out spending money! lol xx |

I went to a 21st Birthday Party in the house across the road, with my Mum....we got back a bit late and my Dad had locked the door!!!! So my dear Mum says, lets go round to the back of the house she had a way in!!!! She found an old knife in the shed and proceeds to slide the catch on the window in the Kitchen....then she tells me to climb in and unlock the door..... A trick I remembered a few years later and used on more than one occassion. So you're Mother can teach you all sorts of good tricks!!!!! Jacquie xxxx |

I've twice locked myself out of the car, once with my small son sitting inside in his car seat. I've also managed to lock myself out of my house when I was rescuing a young blackbird. Had to use a wire coathanger from a neighbour to hook the keys off the hall table. Now I have a spare set of keys which I smeared with vaseline, wrapped in a cloth, and put inside a small coffee jar, then i buried the jar when no-one was looking, in the front garden. Just don't forget where you buried it and leave a stick or something hidden elsewhere to dig up the jar again. |

Thanks everyone for all the great stories, some have had me in stitches, LOL. I work nights in a hotel and the amount of times people have locked them selves out of their room and more often than not they have nothing on when they come down to reception for help, LOL. (No, I shouldn't laugh should I?) Just the other day, a guest's Son came down to reception to say his Mum (somehow) was locked in the toilet in the room and that she had been in there 20 minutes or more! My colleague promptly went and got her out of course. :-) Margaret |

Oh cringe, I locked myself out early one morning. I was desperate for some ciggies, so I went out with no makeup, no bra and a scruffy old tee shirt Id been using to do the gardening in. Got ciggies, drove home, got out of car (dying for a pee, dont you know). No house keys. I could have cried. Thought about smashing glass pane in door - but Victorian stained glass - I dont think so. Sat in the car for a while looking around for a suitable receptical for said pee if I got really desperate and then in the mirror I saw our local street cleaner. He is really a character - but thats another story - Anyway street cleaner was making his away along the grass verges with this long metal thing that picked up paper. Ureka! I got him to poke his metal thing (oh gawd, dont) through my letter box and then clamp onto my keys on the telephone table next to the door. Brilliant, it worked! So if you are ever locked out, theres a thought for you. And also, dont leave your keys by the door overnight - others may have long metal things apart from helpful street cleaners. |

Years ago when Mel & I lived in a 1st floor flat, I went downstairs to empty our rubbish bin and when I got back, the flat door had shut and I hadn't left it on the latch. Luckily, Mel only worked 5 minutes walk away, so I went down to get his keys. Only problem was I was wearing fluffy slippers, and since I'd been making pastry I had flour on my nose! His workmate had a good laugh. nell |

Firstly let me set the scene....... We have two front doors - the original (with a yale lock) and a new one on the porch which is locked from the inside with a key...... My son (aged 18 - 12 A* GCSE and 4 A levels at grade A) goes out of the house slamming the inside front door shut.... goes to open the outside front door..... 'Oh poo' he says, 'no keys'. Turns round to go back inside but ops no keys. He was stuck in the porch for a very, very long time!!!!! |

Years and years ago it happened to me, it was the school holidays and I was home alone (I was about 15/16 I spse). I was putting a milk bottle out on the front step and the door slammed behind me, I had nothing on my feet so had to go round to my neighbours, their son was the only one at home (I had a major crush on him at the time), I got him out of bed banging so hard on the door, but luckily he had a car so he drove me to my Dads job which was about 10 mins away on a buiding site, imagine the sight - me with nothing on my feet tip toeing about over a muddy/rubble filled building site trying to find my Dad! - I was gutted that my next day neighbour hadnt offered to carry me to my Dad, but I eventually found him and got his keys :-) Karen |

Margaret I have dined out on it for years. He was so unimpressed that the only useful thing I could think of to do was take a photo of him. Actually I was crying with laughter so it's amazing that it's in focus! I'll try to scan the photo and put it on the GC photospage sometime or just take a copy of it to every GR meet!!! Daisy |

My 18 month old pushed the door shut while I was putting the buggy up! I tried to break the door down as her and her 8 week old brother were in the house. I managed to crack the frame and the glass but couldn't break the door. Luckily I had left a small bedroom window open so a neighbour got one of his kids to go up his ladder and through the window. I was starting to get a bit panicky because I hadn't got a clue what my daughter was up to all this time. (she had just been sat watching Telletubbies without a care in the world). Most annoying thing was the insurance wouldn't pay up for the door because they said I broke it deliberately and it wasn't an emergancy!!!! (of course I like to lock my kids in the house on purpose, haha)! Claire xx |
