Sandra Sorry to hear about your friend's daughter. I too have epilepsy and have had it since I was 8 years old. Like many others here, it is well controlled with medication and I have two beautiful children - I was completely seizure free during pregnancy. Equally I had a friend at University who suffered a seizure but never had them again - put it down to heatstroke while on a protest march. Hopefully this will be a one off episode for your friend's daughter. I will be praying for her speedy recovery - it must be so frightening for her and her parents. |

Sorry to hear about your friends daughter - must have been very scary for both of them Hopefully it will be a one off but -as others have said- epilepsy is not the end of the world. I have had it since the age of 11 (am now 61) and still taking the medication. I can't drive but then never have been able to and quite honestly with todays roads and traffic chaos I wouldnt want to. Apart from that I've managed to lead normal life, brought up my children, and always been able to work. My son also suffers from it and copes very well so all is not lost. Good luck to her and hope all goes well. |

Hiya Sandra Sorry to hear about your friend's daughter, but her mum did the right thing getting the ambulance. I know how frightening it is when your child has their first fit. Jordan is doing really well on the medication, no more fits, so I really hope it's the same for your friend's daughter. Love and hugs to you all, Mandy :) xx |

Hi My son has been diagnosed with epilepsy. After his first fit they just sent him home as they said everyone is allowed one fit & they wouldn't do any tests until he had another! Saying that there are many types of epilepsy & my son has been fit free for 4 years (he is 7) Penny |

Sandra, could it be sunstroke? I had very similar symptoms years ago (and I'm epileptic, though fits are controlled thank goodness), and sunstroke was the cause. As someone else said, if epilepsy is diagnosed, I've had it for about 42 years, and I can drive, sing onstage, do allsorts without it running my life, or ruining it. Let us know how the daughter is, won't you. x |

I have just been on a course to help me understand Epilepsy, as it is part of my job. I drive a minibus for children with special needs and amongst them are several children with Epilepsy. My understanding is that a child (or indeed an adult) can have a seizure or even two before any significance is placed on it. It is only then that the medical profession see the need to investigate the cause of the seizure. It is indeed very frightening seeing a child having a seizure, and it is a shame that everybody can't be taught how to react when this does happen. Well meaning people can get it wrong, the person fitting doesn't have to be restrained or have their tongue clamped down in their mouth! From what I understand from our lecturer (who was herself an Epileptic) the person having the seizure is not aware of anything so they need reassurance, especially in the case of a child, that all is well when they recover. Bizarre behaviour can occur before a seizure takes place, and usually follows the same pattern every time for that person. This can include shouting, swearing and even removing all one's clothes! Fortunately the children on my bus very rarely have seizures due to medication, but both I and my escort (who sits in the back with them) know the signs to look for. |

Hi Sandra It is possable that the fit was a one off, possably caused by the a virus that also caused the vomiting. It is quite common for people to wet themselves during a fit as they have no control over their bodies and they are often very embarresed about this. No-one can promise that your friends daughter will never have another fit but no-one can tell is she will either. I'm sure the doctors will do every diagnostic investigation they can to find the caurse of the fit and to rule out conditions such as epilepsy. At 13, your friends daughter may be embarassed at having the fit and wetting herself as a result and also frightened at what could be wrong. The media often protrays epilepsy with large fits that prevent an individual from leading a normal life. But people with epilepsy do lead normal lives and there may be girls in school with your friends daughter that have epilepsy that your not aware of. My mother and 2 school friend had epilepsy, my mums started after she'd left school and once diagnosed and given medication for it she has never had a single fit (abt 27yrs fit free). my 2 friend were a bit different as they have had epilepsy all thier lives. the one was well controled with medication but the other refused to take the medication so could fit at any time. My advice to you, your friend and her daughter is to liston to the doctors, do as they ask and if your at all concered ask for a second opinion. As I said it is possable that it was a one off due to an infection. I hope the girl is doing well, and i send my love to you all. |

Hi Sandra I hope your friends daughter is ok? She could have had whats termed as a febrile convulsion! little children can get these due to the heat! ( and yes it can be a one off! hope fully thats the case with your friends daughter!) Dont worry about her wetting herself that happens anyway! My son is an epileptic (fortunatly controlled with medication) the mood swings are usually because of the medicine! and unfortunalty its something we put up with! but worth it to see him free from fits! I shall be thinking of you and your friend, and praying its a febrile convulsion, and NOT epilepsy! love Val :~) |

Hi Sandra When a childs temperature gets too high they often have a fit. My son did. During a fit it is quite normal for them to wet themselves so don't worry about that. As soon as you get their temperature down that is quite often the end of the problem. My son has not had any more fits. When a child has a fit it is very frightening and upsetting for everyone. You have done the right thing and got her to hospital for a check up. my thoughts are with you and i hope she makes a very quick recovery. All the best jane |
