No. 1 has to be Nimrod. then no particular order Entrance of the Qu of Sheba Any Bach organ music This may not come into your definition of Classic but record shops now seem to put all sorts where least expected, so TOP composer in my opinion - Gershwin.

Rhythm and blues and soul music are my favourite styles of music but my favourite piece of classical music is by far the Karelia Suite, Op. 11 written by Sibelius - it gives me goose pimples every time I hear it. My favourite version of it is on an old 33 called 'Sargent Conducts Sibelius' with the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent. Part of it was used as the 'signature tune' for an old TV programme which (I think) was called News Week. It is a truly wonderful piece - full of umph.

Janice I really approve - I love the Russian composers too. My dad brought me up on what he called the 3 giants of classical music, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. He bought lots of LPs by the Atlas Theatre Company, which told stories with some wellknown actors including Alec McCowen & Geoffrey Bayldon, with pieces of classical music in between scenes. The music was always appropriate, so Hans Christian Andersen's Ugly Duckling had music by another Scandinavian, Grieg. The Sleeping Beauty had Tchaikovsky's ballet music, etc. I was particularly fond of some Gluck which accompanied the Three Musketeers, and Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony was Robinson Crusoe, while Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique with the March to the Scaffold was Treasure Island. nell

I listen to Classic FM a lot, and the ads drive me crazy too. It's also very annoying when I put the bathroom radio on, get into the bath or shower and they start playing opera (Classic FM, that is, not my bath or shower!). I hate all that screeching going on when I'm not in a position to turn it off. CB >|<

I like Strauss, all of them, Beethoven Wife likes Motzart best. There is an open air concert with the Royal Philharmonic, at Mount Ephraim Gardens at Hernhill, near Faversham on July 16. Champagne prizes for the best dressed (picnic) table. Concluides with a firework spectacular. David

Beethoven's symphonies 6 and 9 Mozart - Requiem Tchaikovsky - 1812 overture Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue Everything by Puccini but most especially La Boheme and just about all the other popular Operas. At the risk of upsetting purists, I would also include some of the most beautiful music written by present day composers for films such as 'The Mission' and for stage by Britain's own Andrew Lloyd Webber. Patty :-)

Patty, I don't see why film scores shouldn't be regarded as 'classical'. They seem to be very highly regarded and are regularly played on Classic FM, especially their request programmes. I think the works of Nino Rota, Jean Michel Jarre, Michel Legrand, John Williams, Michael Nyman and Hans Zimmer and Andrew Lloyd Webber fully deserve their place amongst the classics. CB >|<
