what a cheery thought

Unknown Report 6 Jul 2005 16:11

France probably got whiff of an impending attack and begged the IOC to give London the games.

i understand what you mean, i always think any mass gathering, especially being international could be a potential target for terrorism, its scary

I can see your point but if that's the case why has it not happened at other big events? Sarah, xxx

How many here can remember the tragic events at the Munich Olympics? (that was in 1972)

Deanna

Deanna Report 6 Jul 2005 16:30

I can remember it. Tragic. But we cannot, as a country, live our lives in fear. Deanna

Lisa I am sure the security services are already on the case. We can't spend our lives worrying. I went to college in London and worked there all through the IRA bombing campaign, the Moorgate tube disaster, the Kings X fire etc. All we can do is take precautions. nell

yes - the olympics are open to any country - no matter what - and I agree -we cant let our fears stop this happening - its a great thing for the UK - and even before a bid was made the plans for security would have been thought out.

I was at the Olympic Games in Munich and as shocked as I was at the time, recent events have been more shocking. I think with the security measures we have now, Al Queda and there like will not target 'obvious' events such as the Olympics and I for one will feel quite safe attending the 2012 Olympics.

i question the security in this country.the royals have had a few scares.williams party someone managed to get in without being stopped.also charles and camillas wedding.a sun reporter managed to get in with a box marked bomb.also the fathers for justice managed to get into buckinham palace.i wouldn't trust the security in this country.xxx):

Lisa, I think with something as international as the Olympics, the English security people will be getting lots of advice from other countries and no, I don,t just mean the Americans. Lol. The Israeli's for one have one of the best security forces in the world.

Jean Durant Report 6 Jul 2005 17:18

Lisa, Sorry to say but in this day and age no amount of security will stop a terrorist. I lived and travelled in London, as did Nell, and millions of others, all through the IRA bombing era. You get on with life. I am thrilled we have the 2012 Olympics and look forward to the regeneration of Stratford, sport centres for our youngsters and the Games themselves. Viva London. Jean x.

Vera Report 6 Jul 2005 17:53

Me too Jean, you just have to accept that there will always be a terroist threat where large amounts of people are gathered. But if we give in to terroism we would never do anything and they would have succeeded!! So Im really pleased London won it and just think how we are all going to benefit - the train system might actually work!!!!

Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 6 Jul 2005 18:00

If the Queen and the royal family are comfortable doing walkabouts and ceremonial occasions without men running alongside their cars/carriages brandishing guns and walkie-talkies, then I think we can feel that our security service has got things pretty well under control. If SHE trusts them, then that makes me feel confident. Maz. XX

Twinkle Report 6 Jul 2005 18:05

It might be too obvious a target. Security has become a major issue now, so realistically the terrorists have little chance of suceeding. Remember the World Trade Centre and Madrid train bombing were 'ordinary' locations targeted on 'normal' workdays.
