Having just read this thread again, I'm shocked that 5.5 is considered unhealthy. The last readings I had were 7.8 on a private test and 8.2 on an NHS one 2 weeks later. That was 2 years ago. I must be at death's door by now! LOL CB >|<

Rosemary, I think a lot of it is to do with stress. I also think that a lot of medical problems are passed on through generations, which we have no control over . Cath

Catherine, My husband thinks stress is the main problem. He smokes , drinks, had heart attack 13 years ago and stopped his drugs 7 years ago. Just take aspirin and statins now. Does what he likes. Chlorestral 5.5. Rosemary.

Roxanne, I don't mind betting I'm far above 5.5. When I ring up for my results next week I know I'll be on edge after discovering my last was 6.5. At least my b.p. has got better. Rosemary.

I smoked for over 40 years, (have stopped for 4), I drink wine,(sometimes lots), but I eat healthily, organic for preference, and have a youthful, optimistic outlook....Ideally, I would like two weeks notice before I die, if at all possible! BC

Roxanne, I read in the papers that the Government guidelines for GPs on cholesterol levels had been changed, so that what was once an acceptable level is now too high. I think that's why they go on at me now - never used to. I've had high blood pressure for many years too, so they told me I have a 50% chance of a heart attack within the next 10 years. I don't believe a word of it, but if it happens, it happens and that's that. I'd rather go that way than get Alzheimer's, like my mother did. As Freddie Mercury put it, 'Who Wants to Live Forever?' Roxanne, What do you call borderline ? Said earlier my last reading (two years ago) was 6.1. Just checked and oh dear, it was 6.5. Will find out next week what my latest is. Luckily I've lost weight and feel more energetic so hope to get more exercise because I'm sure that can help (hope so). Rosemary.

I was brought up to eat lots of fruit and fresh vegetables, and when it became 'fashionable' my mother switched from cooking with lard and dripping to 'healthy' oils, although she'd never stop using butter. Once I had my own home, I continued eating lots of fruit, veg and salads with lean meat, poultry and fish. These days, I have the healthiest diet of anyone I know, and yet every time I go to my GP's, I'm ticked off for having a high cholesterol level and they try to get me to take tablets to reduce it. My elder brother has had a supposedly high cholesterol level for many years. He's smoked like a chimney for the past 50 years or so, but he's still fit as a fiddle. He tried to bring the cholesterol level down by dieting and became almost skeletal. It made no difference at all. I think some people are born with a pre-disposition to heart disease and circulatory problems, while others aren't. My GP reckons that food intake ony accounts for about 15% of blood cholesterol, and the other 85% is inherited in the genes. CB >|<

My mum had bad stroke at 70 dad mild ones at later age which is why I'm careful. I'm 62, sister had breast cancer op. at 68, 2 yrs ago. As I said earlier I don't smoke and drink. Just never liked doing either. If you're happy doing it then of course it's your life but my son's worry about their dad because of his history. Rosemary.

Of course our diet and lifestyle affect our health, and so does our genetic makeup, which is why some people are predisposed to certain things and others aren't. My relatives seem to die of heart disease and stomach cancer. nell

I know someone who died at the ripe old age of 103. His secret - everday he sprinkled his cereal with a little gunpowder. His Obituary said that he left 9 children, 26 Grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and a 15 foot hole in the crematorium wall!! Anna
