I don't pay any attention to the Eurovision but if I had heard that an entrant for BRITAIN wasn't british then yes I would have moaned to high heaven!! I don't care if they are Black, Green, Purple or Yellow but I think anyone representing our country should be born in it and yes I think it should extend to footballers too (I know the rule there is they have to be born here or their parents were) I genuinely am not being racist at all - I think the fact the woman is now getting hate mail is appalling but she would've known that was gonna happen before she entered. IT WAS HER CJOICE TO DO SO!! I still stand by my opinion that ANYONE representing ANY country should be born in that country!! |

Well said Hal Trouble is, the girl around town doesnt always have the confidence to enter a compitition like that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As for the competition being dated, women fought for the freedom of choice. Its their choice to enter,No way is it degrading etc. E x |

In the light of what is seriously happening in the world today, does it really matter that she was not born in this country?she lives here and is representing us in this contest on merit. As for the contest itself, its harmless enough,if people wish to enter these things, they have the freedom to do so,whether anyone else likes it or not,its their choice. As for me,She seems a very pretty girl, but I must admit,I,ve seen prettier just walking around town, Hal. |

Actually Lin, I think she was chosen on her merits and her obvious beauty, I think shes striking in looks. Dont think its anything to do with being Pc etc. If it was because of that, they would have chosen anyone with a colour to their face that was born in England. I still hope she wins for the country she has decided to live in Elaine x |

Brian, that's probably the England cricket team, lol. Not a major football follower but Owen Hargreaves is of Canadian origin though isn't he? |

Unfortunately the rules are that either the contestants are born in England or be in at least 5 years or more continuous residency. If that's the rules then so be it, but I do take exception because it sticks out a mile that someone is being over politically correct - does this girl honestly think that if it was not for the current state of affairs she would have been chosen no I don't think so. |

I wonder how long it will be before some canny entrepreneur starts arranging transfers of Beauty Queens between Countries? For an appropriate fee of course. Well Footballers do it. I do feel that the UK Entrant should be UK born, but I don't care what ethnic background she has, I can see beauty in many guises. |

My comment on the 'English Rose' description was based on the fact that I have seen a picture of her and she certainly does not have an 'English Rose' complexion. She could have been a 'white' muslim, but she is not. :-) |

Like who Brian ? (not disagreeing, just not heard that before). My views, for what they're worth. Arguements have raged for a long time about the merits of beauty contests, and whether they are degrading to women. The problem is, there are still plenty of women who want to enter, and use their looks as the way to earn a crust. That's their decision. Personally I don't think it's degrading, there's nothing wrong with celebrating beauty. I don't think anyones ethnic background should stop them entering, BUT the description of this entrant as an 'English Rose' is wrong. I do think though that to be eligible you should either have been born here or have English parents, I dont think thats the case for this girl (although I've only heard the news reports so could have that wrong). |

Correct me if I'm wrong (I don't follow the game) but aren't a few of the England football team foreign-born? Seems strange to me. |

So much for the people who cry out for ethnic 'Minorities' to intregrate into British society. Its ok for them to have to live like the british, but not to join in and represent the country they have.now live in. No one moaned when Katrina and the waves represented GB and won the Eurovision song contest in 1997 Katrina wasnt British, she was American. But then again, I suppose as she was white no one cared less. Elaine x |

Arguments about sexism apart - and I agree that this kind of competition is outdated - would it make any difference if this years' winner was British-born to foreign-born parents? Her name and complexion would be the same - shame on whoever described her as an 'English Rose' though, as that description is patently inappropriate - and really, she has been chosen as a representative of England. So long as she is a citizen of the country, in these multi-ethnic times, does it matter where she was born. If the rules say that citizenship is the requirement, so be it, surely. |

It is a very out dated thing, dont you think? but each to their own, as far as her being 'an English Rose' sorry arent english women surpose to have peaches and cream complexions. not being racist just truthful, i am certainly not an 'English Rose' im far too dark skinned!!lol but if she was born outside of england it just doesent make sense to me!!! |
