Daniel, As to the original question, society is wealthier , healthier and more equal, tolerant and stable than at any time, whilst as replete as ever with the neuroses that make us human. John

linda P, your very lucky! but lots of people havent been as fortunate to find god, i also feel that being religious doesnt make you any better or worse, its all down to a moral code which unfortunatly some people lack, and I think our society is in serious trouble!

Linda

Linda Report 24 Sep 2005 10:30

In my case, I realised that even though I was brought up to attend church and My parents were Christians, there was something lacking in my life that those around me had, so I asked God to come into my life and change me, and he did, and he has been with me through all the good and bad times (and there has been a few of those !!!!) that I have had If you want to know more try and find an Alpha Course, look on their Website (Alpha. org) Linda P

Linda

Linda Report 24 Sep 2005 10:07

I'm with bendy Wendy on this one, before I read her reply the words that came into my mind was without God, before you all shout at me, about this you can not judge all god fearing people by the ones that you have met, I am a christian but I am also human and I make mistakes (I'm not perfect) as are all other christian but I have a personal experience of God that I would not Cange for anything Linda

Well said Daniel. When I think of a 'godless' society I think of a society that has rejected the VALUES of religion ie, they don't treat other people as they would be treated, or value their elders, or respect property ect. I think we ARE a godless society. I am not religious, but I see 'godless' as meaning valueless as well as un religious. Of course there are lots of good, and worthy people who are without a religion, but I don't expect everyone who went to church every sunday in Victorian times actually trully believed, but they had a good moral grounding......I'll stop talking rubish now. I never was very good at explaining myself, But yes I think todays societ in general is godless, lacking in good moral values, and very selfish. Claire xx

I'd agree with that Daniel - I'm religious myself but don't worry whether anyone else shares my beliefs. What I do think is that some of (what I see as) the more important morals from religions (such as doing unto others etc) as opposed to the more judgemental ones (don't do this cos the Bible says so etc) make life nicer for everyone, wherever you get them from.

Daniel Report 24 Sep 2005 09:28

I'm agnostic it doesn't matter if society is 'Godless' (whatever that actually means) What is important is that society behaves in a kind, caring and respectful way. It's not religion, it's just good manners.

Really interesting question and it's sad to see how some people see society. I'd say caring but needy and isolated.

I agree with you Pat. Godless people are sometimes better that god-faring ones and the self-centred can be mixture of both. You probably gathered from some of my comments in the past that I go to church. I remember some 30 years ago I went with a friend from work to a church gathering of younger people and was confronted my someone who said 'if you had a stronger faith your leg would grow back' - need to say I quickly left that meeting visibly upset. Perhaps I was a tad sensitive then but it was also around the time my wife was unwell in hospital expecting our only child.
