Hiya Sandra I feel sorry for him too. - it's very sad that he's not been able to pull himself out of his addiction.

I notice you chose Saloon to describe his condition - very apt.. The man is a fool... People wait years for a transplant and he has just abused the gift he was given. Dav

Its very sad isnt it, shows money and stardom doesnt always bring happiness, but can make a mess and its certainly made a mess for Goarge. Donna

Many moons ago I went out with a guy who used to play top level football at junior level - he was in a match against a very young George Best and was torn between hating him (cos he was so good) and wanting to just stand and watch! Incredible talent, such a waste.

Sorry, can't see what you see in him. I'm sorry he is ill and it is costing money to look after him, but it is self inflicted and he was given a second chance. Ros.

hiya and thanks,he was a tasty bit of trousers. i can see it cos he is my age lol. 5 ys ago my cousins son was at man chester united along side of becks , keane etc(obveous not had the same talents but could have) then he started to party, got his self a girl. then a baby, then it all went pear shape, He now is training to be a builder but he is happy, like the saying goes , those without sin cast the first stone. ps saloon i pinched from suns headline lol x

Plenty of great footballers at the time of George Best. Look at the whole of the England Squad of the 1960's early 1970's which included Bobby Moore, Bobby & Jack Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Nobby Stiles, Gordon Banks they were brilliant, but they do not command the same adoration as George Best does I can't understand it. He wasn't the great player that people reckon for that long, don't think he could match the great Pele. I reckon he was well overrated, I think its sad he hasn't been able to reform, he was given a second chance and he still abuses his body. There must be many others who would love a second chance and would not abuse it. Pat x

I have to confess that all I can think of is that poor donor and the donor's family. What a waste of a good liver. I'm afraid I can't feel any sympathy for him whatsoever, and make no apologies for it. x

Sandra, I'm not quite sure why you used the expression 'those without sin cast the first stone' but as Dav in Lincs said, people wait years for a transplant. A close friend of ours is donating one of his kidneys to his daughter. She suffers from Allports syndrome, hereditary her Aunt died at 18 from the same condition. She is now 17, kidney function is down to 10% and as far as I know has only just gone on dialysis. This is not a self inflicted condition and we and everyone else are wishing them all the best and that it is a success. Ros.

Best's current illness isn't anything to do with drinking. He has an infection in his liver that is common in people who have had liver transplants. Hardly self inflicted:)

Joy Report 4 Oct 2005 17:38

I have read - ''His current problems are thought to be related to immuno-suppressant drugs he has been taking since his lifesaving liver transplant operation in 2002 rather than alcohol abuse..... ....Best had been “off the drink” prior to being admitted to the hospital. It’s only reported when he’s on it. Best has asked for thanks to be passed on to all his supporters. “He wants to thank everybody who has sent him well wishes. He’s grateful for the support and understands the criticism,”. Professor Roger Williams, the doctor in charge of Best’s care, said today that he hoped the former Northern Ireland international could beat his drinking problems. “He can do it – he did it before, get off the alcohol. He has had long spells when he does not drink,” he told GMTV. “He is a very nice person and never complains. He is a very good patient and I have been his doctor for a good long time. Everybody is different, everybody has problems.”''. I agree, Sandra, with you. Joy

hiya joy and thanks.yes pat a lot of footy players better than george, i think its the cheekiness (in nice way) that people like about him, a bit of a rough diamond if you will. but it depends on what floats your boat lol, now we could start a thread with that x

Saints Alive Report 4 Oct 2005 18:29

With all due respect to David , Best was told after his transplant ( which he got a bit quicker than most !!! ) that if he drank again he would cause himself injury, he has over the last two years been drinking, involved in fights with woman, through drink and not taken the advice of the doctors . The great Jimmy Greaves had and fought a drink problem , yet the only time I see him in the papers is when he is writing an article about the game he loved football. Yes George Best was a good footballer but I think he has abused the doner system by taking the p*** out of the doner and his family by drinking again after the transplant when told not to do so by the Doctors. Jeez there are thousands of people waiting for transplants in the country and I bet you none of them would have behaved the way George did . And yes my rant is over :-)))

Dav

Dav Report 4 Oct 2005 18:30

George Best has a kidney infection as a result of the drugs needed to assist his liver transplant.... total media sh1te... George Best has drank himself into a stooper relentlessly despite being warned - having the luxury of a donor - and regardless went out on the lash to extremes again.. He walks over peoples lives like he is god and we are expected to feel sorry for him- well he can kiss my ass.. If it was your daughter, son or partner who donated or even worse required a liver... can you tell me you would be happy in the George has abused this second chance??? Think Not... So I understand what you are saying with regards it being a side effect of the drugs - but its not like its a recent transplant, he has been abusing it since it went in.. My best wishes and hopes are for those who really need a liver to share a second chance with their families and reach goals that are worthwhile... not this pi55head.. Dav
