Hi Dee :O) Dentist assured me before we started that a crown was not necessary - if it had been I would have had it extracted. I AM an NHS patient and dentist does both, but apparently because the cavity is so large, the work could not be done as NHS ?!?! In the long run, I suppose the cost could be outweighed if I can get another 20 or 30 years out of the tooth - but we will see :O) £279 for the treatment - £89 for the composite filling, plus x-rays (oh they were on NHS lol)......... |

Poor you Anne...just had root canal treatment following abscess myself....but I'd have had more pain in my purse than my mouth if I'd been charged £400!!!!! Guess you haven't got an NHS dentist? One big double tooth so three root canals to clean pack and treat (over a series of appointments), plus two lots antibiotics. Temporary fillings done etc. etc. X-rays too. All a lot of work! Cost £82, not including the prescription charges for the anti's. As far as I know it is always necessary to have a tooth crowned following this treatment. My dentist says it is best NOT to have this done for between 3 to 6 months following root canal work. Allows root work to settle and make sure no infection is remaining. Metal crown on NHS will be a further £100, but a porcelain one, which is cosmetic, will have to be done privately at a cost of £300. (unless its on a front tooth I suppose). My sympathies go to any of you suffering tooth infections! Very painful!!! Dee x |

I know what you're going through! I've got my third appointment on Thursday for my root canal work. I keep getting abscesses come up every week and while they're here my dentist can do the proper filling, so it's all temporary ones! Jan |

Joan - no chocolate thank you :O) am dieting now lol..... And yes having it removed would have been cheaper and less stressful in the end. Margaret - thank you soooo much for the graphic explaination (NOT) - had a fair idea but had been trying not to imagine too much LOL.......... And No!! Not having a crown, the tooth he said was worth saving - shame he didn't predict a quarter of it breaking off after the first 2 weeks :O( But even without the crown it is costing nearly £400!!!! So I guess you could say I am getting value for money pmsl |

Ann - the Fair One - I have just finished having two deep root fillings and two crowns made and went through the same slow process as you. The 'thing' they clean the canals with is like a very fine wire probe with a bend/hook on the end. This is pushed right up into the canal and scraped down again to clear any debris etc. I assume you will be having crowns ? Well if you are, the next stage after the canals are permanently filled is to fit a metal 'peg' into the canal and attach temporary crown (a cast of your mouth having been made). A couple iof weeks wait, temporary crowns yanked off and ceramic ones inserted. All this interspersed with x-rays etc. I'm glad it's all over and done with. My problem now is having the confidence to eat naturally and stop worrying in case the crowns fall out. ow stupid can you get ?? |

Hi Julie :O) Hope you get rid of them headaches - don't put up with them too long - go to your GP. At least I had the injection this time - last appt I was nearly jumping out of the chair. This time was much better - except that I could hear 'things' - no idea exactly what was going on - but I know he was using something in the actual root canals to clean them out (sorry to those of faint stomach) - unfortunately I have a vivid imagination which didn't help LOL |
