Since Daddy has been living with me my sign language skills have improved dramatically and now we are attending the deaf clubs twice a week too, I am seriously thinking of doing BSL levels 1 and 2 and becoming a sign language intrepretor.... it would mean lots of training and then being self employed, but I don't think I would ever be out of work as the deaf community know and trust me as they have known me all of my life. Just gotta work out if I can afford to take the courses and see if its possible!! Me excited!! keep your fingers crossed for me please! Credit card gonna take a battering but I satrt on Thursday night..... they have accepted me with no pre-interview as the course co-ordinator knows my parents from old and she says my signing will be good enough to join mid-term!! YEAY

Great idea! You've got the ideal entry if the deaf community already know and trust you. I trained & taught as a teacher of the deaf for a while, and I've lectured some deaf & hearing-impaired students who were training as primary teachers. We had some fabulous interpreters working with us - and there were also opportunities for interpreting at Graduation ceremonies etc. I'm sure you'd find work if things are similar in the UK. thanks guys and I'm impressed there are others that do sign on here. I can't believe its taken me til I am 40 to even consider it but hey now i just have to get a course. Gonna speak to the people who run Reading Deaf club and see if they provide any training as I may as well get tuition there if i am gonna be there every week with Daddy. :O) Plus i can make sure that when we are at home Daddy and I never use our voices to each other and i will defo have to learn it quickly then!! :O)

I've always thought it would be a good idea to teach sign language in schools. They had deaf unit at my daughter's school until a couple of years ago, it's now been closed as there were only 2 deaf students at the school. What made it such a shame was that the 2 deaf students were teaching sign language tothe kids that wanted to learn it. Joy

I may be wrong Diana, but I seem to remember someone telling us that if you have a deaf or partial hearing person within the family unit, then you are able to take the courses for free. My wife Dianne is 75 per cent deaf, but she didn't want to do the courses at the time. Check with your local college. John

GO FOR IT! My number one ambition has been to be fluent in 5 languages before I'm 30 (so far am conversational in french and that's it) and one of those languages is BSL. Would love to know how you find the course to be and maybe when I have the time I'll enrol as well. love becx

John.... thanks for that i will look into it!! Would be a great help if it was free! Vonny.... they do that here too with some children and I for one think its fab, all my neices and nephews can do the alphabet as a minimum and they love it.... usually they do it to the alphabet song. Daddy is really pleased and excited that he can help me learn by signing to me in the evenings...... So now he has a job to do and he feels worthy again!! :O)
