Mid-way through The Constant Gardener by John le Carre - really enjoying it. Set mostly in Kenya and full of espionage, intrigue and yet very romantic. Over christmas read A Year in the Merde by Stephen Clarke - had me in stitches. Must get the sequel Merde Actually. Jacqui |

Margaret I feel the same way. The more I read of it the more I enjoy it. I've also read My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult recently. Another one I would recommend. |

Yesterday I just finished Alan Bennett's 'Untold Stories' which my brother gave me for Christmas. Its a mix of autobiography and commentary on the theatre, paintings, sexuality etc. I am about to start Daphne Du Maurier's 'The House on the Strand' and have a small pile of books after that, including a biography of the Mexican painter Frieda Kahlo, a book about Shakespeare and a book about 4 sisters who all married famous men. After that my mum gave me book tokens to get a fresh supply! nell |

if you like reading, then why not join in with our GReaders reading group on this board?? Just put GReaders into the search box and all the threads will come up. You just help choose 2 books at the start of the month, read 1 or both, then at the end of the month tell everyone what you thought. Its a great way to try out different books and get some recommendations. Everyone is welcome! At the moment I am going through a re-reading phase. Am currently whizzing through The Stand by Stephen King and next is Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. Both are faves of mine and this will be the umpteenth time I have read them. Maz. XX |

Hi Bella Donna If Len comes back he may wish to add to this, but briefly, A Monk Swimming is Malachy McCourt's account of Malachy and Frank's time in America when they returned there as adults. Does not have the same lyrical breathlessness that Frank's writing has and I felt Malachy was trying to cash in on Frank's success. Couldn't help feeling the entire book was a bit of an ego trip. I'm sure there would be plenty of people who would disagree with me though! Cheers Anna |

Just finished reading 'Predator' by Patricia Cornwell - quite disturbing! Len - are you still around? Are you enjoying A Monk Swimming? I liked Frank McCourt's book - Angela's Ashes much more. I couldn't bring myself to see the movie as I didn't see how they could possibly do justice to the emotions expressed in the book. Cheers Anna |
