Yes :)) Church-yards always fascinated me when I was small, and still do now!. I used to visit them with my Gran and Nanna, and used to like looking at those big head-stones, and the different shapes, and reading how old they were, not much has changed, all these years on! :)) |

We have a new shopping Mall in Norwich and one of the entrances passes through a church and graveyard. I cannot walk through it without having a look at the gravestones - just in case I see a name I recognise, and also because they are so fascinating aren`t they? I have visited several local churchyards looking for lost rellies, it is wonderful if you find someone you have been looking for but it is also a lovely peaceful way to spend an afternoon - Does that make me a sad weirdo? I hope not! Frances |

When I was about 11/12 my friend and I would walk through the cemetry near to us. One day we found a grave that looked so sad, dirty uncared for and over grown with weeds, a young man was buried there who was in the 1st world war his name was 'fred' we took it on ourselves to clean it up, weed it and place fresh flowers there we did it for a long time, strange really !! |

There used to be a graveyard at the back of my grans house, so as a child we used to go in there often for a walk around and I was fascinated by some of the things I read on the headstones, I think this was one of the first things that got me started in being interested in the history of people and how they used to live and how they died. Gerri, You are ---not yet I hope -- but we take great care when we come across these stones. Sounds daft but we as modern ag labs have an efinity(sp) with those who worked the land before us. Actually if you knew how many 'funerals' take place you'.d be surprised. Not all burials are a national thing --- most are a simple service for those we don't know. |

Not all are in graveyards.... We've had a lot here in the beacons that were obviously drovers/farmers graves ---- you come across them every so often. As for graveyards - I've seen them dug up --re buried dug again--and the stones used as a footpath! |

I'm almost 57 years old and have visited my family grave yard for as long as I can remember.(All saints Church, Kings Langley) Mum insisted that we tend the family grave. (This is where she now herself lays)aged almost 90. There is a grave there of an infant, and as far back as I can remember there has always been fresh flowers laid. We buried our Mum late last year and there was STILL fresh flowers on that infants grave! I sadley buried my Sister Paula 1/12/2005 :-(((...guess what?.... No flowers on that infants grave :-((( There is now .....;-))) 'Always rememeberd, never forgotton' ( NOT related) |

most definately, even drag hubby along, Lemons right poor spouses of genea buffs. Past summer drove to another part of Ontario about 300 miles west to find an old village that we researched and found hubby's g grandparents lived there. Found cementary and went walking sure enough found not only his g grandparents plot but a lot of his g aunts & uncles to. What a find. Besides walking through a cemetery is probably one of the most peaceful places to be on a nice warm day. (Of course unless theres a funeral taking place) lol. Deb |

There are a lot of interesting gravestones in the churchyard that I visit and one has three adults and five children on it, and I wondered if they were all buried there because there does not seem to be enough room. I dont want to sound morbid about these things, but I do wonder about them.... |

I do! I want to know what they died of ~~(It's very frustating that the grave stone doesnt tell you) Like when you visit a friend in Hospital...I want to know why everyone is there!!! Not morbid...Just bloooody nosey lol Nosey Gerri. PS...did you know that we bury them below ground.....on the continent, they bury them one on top of the other, above ground? Just a useless bit of 'did you know' information lol |

Yes. When I was eight I climbed over a wall to get into a graveyard because the gate was locked and I wanted to look round. My family were horrified at what the neighbours might think I was turning into. They're very relieved it was genealogy and not necrophilia : ) |
