Not all are in graveyards.... We've had a lot here in the beacons that were obviously drovers/farmers graves ---- you come across them every so often. As for graveyards - I've seen them dug up --re buried dug again--and the stones used as a footpath!

Gerri, You are ---not yet I hope -- but we take great care when we come across these stones. Sounds daft but we as modern ag labs have an efinity(sp) with those who worked the land before us. Actually if you knew how many 'funerals' take place you'.d be surprised. Not all burials are a national thing --- most are a simple service for those we don't know.

when my kids were little and we went off for the day, the cry was 'oh not another graveyard mummy!' i dont do it as much now as alot of the graveyards have all the headstones noted. i only go now if i know where someone is to photo graph the headstone, but then again................ tina x

There used to be a graveyard at the back of my grans house, so as a child we used to go in there often for a walk around and I was fascinated by some of the things I read on the headstones, I think this was one of the first things that got me started in being interested in the history of people and how they used to live and how they died. When I was about 11/12 my friend and I would walk through the cemetry near to us. One day we found a grave that looked so sad, dirty uncared for and over grown with weeds, a young man was buried there who was in the 1st world war his name was 'fred' we took it on ourselves to clean it up, weed it and place fresh flowers there we did it for a long time, strange really !!

We have a new shopping Mall in Norwich and one of the entrances passes through a church and graveyard. I cannot walk through it without having a look at the gravestones - just in case I see a name I recognise, and also because they are so fascinating aren`t they? I have visited several local churchyards looking for lost rellies, it is wonderful if you find someone you have been looking for but it is also a lovely peaceful way to spend an afternoon - Does that make me a sad weirdo? I hope not! Frances

Yes I love looking round and reading about people. It's good to remember them-and interesring. I have liked to do it since I was little.

Yes :)) Church-yards always fascinated me when I was small, and still do now!. I used to visit them with my Gran and Nanna, and used to like looking at those big head-stones, and the different shapes, and reading how old they were, not much has changed, all these years on! :))
