Burns could face prison over claim Celebrity Big Brother contestant Pete Burns could face jail over his 'gorilla-skin' coat, a Government minister warned on Monday. The 'Dead Or Alive' star claims his fur coat is made from the endangered animals. Now the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has stepped in to say Burns may face 'serious consequences' if this turns out to be true. Trading in endangered species carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and an unlimited fine. Biodiversity Minister Jim Knight said: 'Gorilla skins belong on gorillas, not on reality TV show contestants. Gorillas are critically endangered, and any promotion of gorilla products in this country can only put these amazing creatures in further peril. 'If this is in fact a gorilla skin, there may be serious consequences. 'Any gorilla skin acquired after June 1947 would require an exemption permit, which would be highly unlikely to be granted. Equally, any gorilla skins or other products brought into this country require an import permit.' The coat has already sparked a furious row with fellow housemate Jodie Marsh. When surgically-enhanced singer Burns said he was offended by Marsh's autobiography, in which she spilled details about her ex-boyfriends, the glamour girl retorted: 'Well, I think it's low that you wear a monkey coat. It offends me every time I see it on your back.' Burns hit back: 'That thrills me. I get off on the fact that my coat offends someone who put her boyfriend's dirty underwear in a book. I'm thrilled. 'I wish I had a sable coat and a chinchilla dressing gown and every other fur I could lay my hands on.' Published: Monday 09th January 2006 __________________

Roxanne, they had a specialist on BBLB the other day, and he confirmed that it is Gorilla.

Roxanne Report 10 Jan 2006 13:27

Did he actually say it was 'gorilla'? somehow I think he could just be saying it for a reaction, I cant believe anyone would wear such a thing. Danger mouse, The people that dug up that womans body are as bad as the people that promote fur!!(worse actually) I am an Animal rights person but neither myself or my friends would turn to violence or pressure to get our opinions heard.

Danger Mouse, I'm into animal rights. I wouldn't dig up a body, but i'd gladly throw red paint on him! I think you should put 'If SOME animal rights people......'

Bob, This is an endangered species, do you know what they do to this Animals? I do. their hands and feet are cut off for ornaments, their pelts are used for fur, some even like to have gorilla heads adorning their homes, Sorry there is a huge difference!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paul

Paul Report 10 Jan 2006 12:44

Bob, using leather is different. It is a product which otherwise would go to waste when it is slaughtered for meat. Fur doesn't work like that. Anyway, I don't wear leather, or have any leather items!

Ok the bloke looks a sight, and I dont hold with killing animals just for their skin, BUT how many of you have purses, gloves, handbags, shoes, wallets, all made from REAL leather? upholstery, key fobs..........and so on......... When an animal dies it makes sense(to me) to use it for domestic purposes. My grandaughter has just been to Africa, for a working holiday. on a nature reserve. and most of the pictures of the animals are fantastic, but there are a few showing the disection and use, (after a post mortem)of a giraffe that was found dead, for feed for other animals.
