I had hypnosis to stop smoking. I was the ultimate sceptic, only going as nagged by hubby to do something. I laid back in the chair and he put on this tranquile sounds cd and just talked. I was laying there thinking what a waste of money this is, Im not hypnotised, Im hearing every word and Im awake. I was quite disappointed. He seemed to sense this and said to me 'when you wake, Im going to ask you to do something to prove that your subconcious has taken this in'. Well, I thought we'll be sitting here all b****** day then. So he counts down to 1 and says, fully awake. And I sit up and say thanks very much but I was awake all the time. He then asked me to hold my hand out straight in front of me, and said I will prove to you that your subconsious heard me even though you think it didnt. So there I am with this smug grin, holding out my hand and he put his hand flat out about a foot above mine. And then he began to slowly move his hand up. Well, guys please believe me, you know that feeling you get when you hold two magnets a couple of inches apart? You can feel the power of one trying to drag the other to it? Well, thats just how it felt, like strong waves were coming down from his hand and pulling mine up. He moved his hand up, mine was pulled up. He lowered his hand, my lowered. I would never have believed it, really I wouldnt. I stayed off the fags for nearly a year until a pending bereavement made me think of the one fag I had hidden for desperation stakes in the airing cupboard. I really regret lighting that one up. |

My Mum went about 17 years ago to give up smoking and it worked I went the week after and it didn't work for me ;-( Mum has never gone back on the ciggies I only gave them up Late March last year :-) and it wasn't hypnosis that did it. As Bryan says we are all different not all susceptible. I say it's worth a try :-))) Nothing to lose but your money, good luck. Pat x |

It works best on intelligent people who keep an open mind and co-operate with the therapist. Len |

My Mother went to a hypnotist on 27th Sept. 1978 to give up a 40+ a day habit. She hasn't had a fag since. However, a few months later she saw a different hypnotist to loose weight but it didn't work. (She'd put on the weight not through comfort eating but 'cos everything tasted so good once she'd stopped smoking) |

I tried it to lose weight, but, all the time he was saying things that contradicted the ethos we have on Weight watchers way of eating which hubby & me have done for years.Didnt think it worked ,but it did keep me on the straight & narrow for about a month ,sticking to the weight watchers way ,& i lost weight, BUT after that it lost its way, guess if I,d done top up sensions it might have lasted ,but at £35 a throw .I couldnt afford it!! At present anyone can become a hypno-therapist, its unregulated but should be. Beware con-men (and women). len |

Personally, I would never let anyone take over my mind. I always give it a wide berth. A number of years ago, I was on a course, and a fellow student was a hypnotist. He produced tapes to help people sleep. We each had to give a talk on any topic in sydicates, and he chose hypnotism. Later on he was asked to give a demonstration out of class. Apparently one person went 'out' immediately and was snoring. So much so, that after the demo, he asked everyone not even to mention this to him as he was liable to go 'off' again. He told me later that I was very strong minded and would be difficult to hypnotise. He had tested me without my knowledge. This is my experience. Anne |

I wouldn't mind giving it a try, but i am concerned i would end up on stage doing something daft like singing 'I'm to sexy for my pants' or something like it!! Yvette |

I work at dept of health and until a couple of years ago I used to be in the team responsible for complementary medicine policy. I would strongly suggest that if anyone wants to see a hypnotist/hypnotherapist or any other kind of alternative therapist they should ask some commonsense questions - do they belong to a voluntary regulatory body, and which one (check it with the regulatory body in case they have been 'struck off') - do they have insurance - do they think they can help the particular condition I have, and what kind of evidence do they have that they can - how much will it cost per session, and how many sessions will be needed - do they have a complaints procedure, and what is it Angela |
