My mother thinks it should be law that all restaurants, cafes snack bars etc shoul have a better selection of vegetarian foods. For example McDonalds, the only Vegeatrian mal they do, is one of the new Deli Melts (Which might I add, is discusting). What do you think? My mother isn't vegetarian, but is appalled by the lack of selection. What ye reckon?

Hi Paul I agree with her. I'm not a vegetarian nor is anyone in my family but I still think there should be more choice wherever you go. Juliexx

You could try writing to McDonalds or any other cafes/restraunts/pubs etc where you've been and don't feel they've given a decent amount of veg options

Davo - I don't know of any Vegetarian restaurants, but I dont see why not. But the whole thing is about selection and choice. There's plenty out there already for carnivores!

here's a question for all the veggies. Can you eat certain sweets etc ? I know that things like jellies used to be made of gelatine, so couldn't be eaten to vegans, but what about other sweets, things with shells etc. I had thought of giving up meat before, but I dont think I could go without a tube of smarties now and then !!

Salsa is totally suitable for veggies dont you think Daisy :-)

Paul Report 13 Jan 2006 21:51

Apparently smarties used to be made of beetles shells, but definatly not anymore. I dont know if this was true in the first place!

Paul. Vegetarian restaurants specialize in vegetarian meals and may not be able to cook meat dishes well. The reason normal restaurants (for the want of a better word, not that vegetarian restaurants are not normal) is that they don't know how. As you say, vegetarian meals in restaurants are mainly naff. If restaurants are made to have a selection of vegetarian dishes, you'd have a bigger selection of naff dishes. The answer is to go to a restaurant that you know does a good selection of vegetarian food. Even during WW2 there were vegetarian restaurants. We have a wartime vedggie cookery book from Sunshine Restaurants in Sheffield. By the way, my wife has been a vegetarian since she was a baby. Regards David

I have to say that the idea that a vegetarian restaurant migt serve meat is hilarious ! contradiction in terms !

Wot a clever mummy - I agree. It has been slow in coming, but we at last have salads, of sorts.....

I think that all resterants should provide a good selection of Vegertarian and vegan dishes (there is a difference). When I eat out I often choose a vegetarian option because I know it woun't make me ill, but I also do have some meat dishes (usually chicken) or fish. I have friends and cousins who are either vegetarian or vegan and we find it difficult to eat out because of the lack of selection. I have known of vegans who have ended up having a plain salad (no dressing) and fresh fruit (or nothing) because of a lack of selection.

The veggy choice is usually very poor - if there actually IS a choice, as opposed to the one veggie dish, which is offered everywhere. (Except in my local, where there are always five or six.) Perhaps you should write to the Ministry of health - they are supposed to be encouraging us to eat more fruit and veg. Jay

why doesn't macdonalds fish burger count? A vegan woudnt eat it , but most veggies would

Rachel Report 13 Jan 2006 22:48

I would guess the mayo might have something in it. Eggs are difficult to garuntee so alot of veggies still stay clear of it.
