Hello, I'm a new member to the site and have just input the family tree notes I took in my teens when my grandmother was alive. I don't think I've done too badly for my first day, got 142 names on the tree, going back 5 generations, but now I need some advice on how to proceed. I'm generally interested in the whole tree, but my particular interest is the maternal female line, I've done as much as I can with the free bits of the various census records, but I don't know where I look to find out the maiden name of the various wives listed. Any tips on tracing this line? Also, one branch seems to have come from Ireland, how do I trace them? So many questions...any pointers would be great. Only proviso is that I can't pay the search fees of most of the sites I've looked at, not yet at least, so starting points in freely available material is the best. |

Hello Sally Welcome to the boards. There are some lovely people on the Records and Tips Boards willing to do look ups for you, at their own expense. All you have to do is post details of what you are looking for and they'll get back to you. I do them myself when I've got spare credits. :o)))))))))))))))))))))))) Joy |

Hi Sally, and welcome to the mad house, these boards are a excellent place to start, try the tip boards and the records boards, loads of lovely people on there, who will help you with all your requests, and you can have a laugh at the same time. one word of advise, if you want to do your tree, don't spend to much time on this 'general board' as once you start, 'reading/chatting' nothing else gets done, not even the house work (whats that!!) as for cooking, shopping, ironing etc, forget it lol......have fun, and again welcome..........Lilly ps sounds as if you are off to a very good start with your tree, well done. |

Hi Sally, Welcome to the madhouse that is the GR general board. Remember that although people will willingly look up references for you on tips or records, you still have to be prepared to pay out for certificates to prove your research. Genealogy is not a cheap hobby, have fun Vivienne |

Hi Sally Welcome to the mad house. Don't worry we're only mad on family trees but we don't bite. The homepage has links to loads of info that would be good to read. If you go to the bottem there is a section called Genealogy resources. Work through each section and it will explain what information you can get from different things. For maiden names you would need marriage certificates or from 1911/1912 the index pages (which give you a reference to order the certificates) give the spouces surname and for births it gives the mothers maiden name. Hello Sally, very new at this myself, only joined genes in september in fact, only started my research then, so have an awful lot to learn myself before I could possibly advise anyone else. But I would not have found as many members of my famly if it had not been for the generous help and advice of the lovely nut cases on here. They are brilliant in a crisis, generous with advice and great to have a laugh with. Congrats on your own hard work so far and welcome to the boards. Lin |

Hi Sally. Welcome. You will find very helpful and friendly people on these boards. On the General board we talk and chat about everyday events, as well as genealogy, and also have a few laughs as well. The Tips board and Record office board's are also great places to add a query, or get an answer to a question. There are also many of us from the South West Pacific..... Australian's and New Zealander's who can help with answer's to a question if your looking for ancestors that came O/seas. Have a nice day. Tony Oz...:>)) Australia. |
