My brother had the job of naming me and he chose Michelle, which I hated. If I had been a boy, he wanted to name me Dicky Mervyn after his two friends, can you imagine a lifetime of that?!? M. |

I quite like my name 'Kaye' - my decided to add an 'e' on the end to make it different and I'm glad he did. You think you've got problems - my poor Dad is called Cyril! lol No one had any idea why my Gran decided to call him that, but we think she was bullied into it by a relative for some reason? She only ever called him by his middle name 'David' and that is what he goes by. So next time you think you have a boring name think yourself lucky that it wasn't a horrible, embarrassing one ;-) Kaye x |

Don't like mine much, but don't absolutely hate it either! If I'd been a boy, Dad wanted to call me Basil, so I suppose I should be thankful (no offence to any Basils)!! |

I do not mind mine but hate people spelling it with a G thinking it is short for Gillian. In France it is a boys name the way we say it. Second name is Irene---Yuk, thanks Gran!!! If I could change, I would like to be Charlotte! Jill xx :) |

I hate my first name with a passion. It's always been the butt of endless tiresome jokes that everyone thinks they're the first to come out with. My mother; apparently, wanted to name me Gloria, and I'm glad she didn't, as I don't like that either. I've never thought too much about what I would like to be called, but I'd prefer my middle name to have been the first one. Someone once said she saw me as a 'Miranda', but I think she'd either been drinking too much or was having a funny turn. CB >|< |

Yes, prefer being called Rosalind, but don't make a fuss about it. Out here it is a Portuguese name and so get called Rosalinda by some (Beautiful Rose, who are they kidding!) My sister's name is Estelle. Rosalind. |

Hate my name! It gets spelt wrong and pronounced wrong! For as long as I can remember I have always been called Lindy. Why some parents give their children one name and then call them by another name, I will never know. My late Dad was named Daniel but was always know as Pat, and for many years I thought that his name was Pat. Many people thought that my brother Patrick was named after our Father, as he was often called Pat junior. My Mum's first name is Yvonne, but is only known by her second name, Lurline. My sister Nora-Lee Ann hated her names so much that when she turned twenty one she changed her name to plain Lee. ( I never had the courage to do that.) Then she goes and names her daughters Storm and Skye. Oh Well,! each unto his/her own. Lindy ;-))))) |

I quite like my name, the only time I didnt was when I was at primary school when the teacher used to pronounce it wrong (marry) and I hated it becasue the other kids used to laugh, my mum was originally going to call me Wendy but my dad said he preferred Marie. If I was a boy I would have been Frankie after my dad. Marie |

I dont dislike my name.BUT anyone calls me SHIRL & they get short shift. Reminds me of Joyce Grenfill Who did a monologue about her friend Shirl. Younsters dont ask who Joyce Grenfill was!!. I used to hate with a vengence tho my second name May. didnt ever like to own up to it,but since doing family research I now know its a family second name that has come down thro several generations ,so I,m quite honoured. Pity I didnt pass it on ,always swore i wouldnt, now its too late to do so,and no one else in the family did either so its died out!! Shirley |

I've seen loads of really nice names here - I guess we're never happy with what we've got? I remember having a friend called Rowena at school - she hated her name but I thought it was great and wished my Mother had called me something more unusual like that. Kaye x |

I really like my name and don't like it being shortened. I gave my children unusual names with a more 'usual' second name so that they had a choice, but they've stayed with their first, first name. They all have some sort of nickname even though I always call them by their 'proper' name and they seem to like that. What really annoyed me though, was finding out that a teacher at school had insisted on shortening my second daughter's name on the basis that she couldn't pronounce the real one - it's not hard, honest. My daughter was too timid to object and the nickname stuck for years. Now, she uses both but on her own terms. |
