I liked them too Suzy lol. Haven't seen any for years but when I was a kid they used to live under the corners of the carpet by the fireplace in my gran's:)

Suzy, I can understand you not wanting to kill them, they do look rather inoffensive, bless!!just bad press like lots of other things in life. I wont kill anything either, I normally catch them and then put them outside:-)))

Suzy, I quite like silverfish too and thought you might be interested in a quote from Moyra Bremner's Enquire Within which says that silverfish are 'to be pitied and loved' because they are as old as the dinosaurs but failed to evolve very far! It also says you can keep them as pets in a jam jar and feed them on flour (they like the starch) but I don't think I'd go that far. Carolyn

Carolyn Report 4 Feb 2006 15:08

Suzy, I love newts aswell! When I was young I had some pet newts and I remember taking them into school and my art teacher made a film of them. The idea was to make them look like prehistoric monsters and I the result was really funny (he added dramatic music soundtrack). I'd love to see that film again - where are you Mr Smalley??? Carolyn

Had some silverfish in my old house, just in the bathroom. My current house has carpet mites - any suggestions folks?

Your thread brought back a memory. When I was young -a long time ago!- I used to stay at my nans, sit in a corner in her sitting room by the fireplace and read some of my dads old books (The horse with the green nose!) It was always quiet with her clock ticking away on the mantlepiece and chiming every quarter of an hour and silver fish scuttling about on the hearth. Some years ago we had a few by our old boiler and I was so pleased to see them beacuse of the old memories. We don't seem to have them anymore. (If we did I wouldn't swap them for a newt!) Chris
