Tilly - very cute :) My hubby said we could name our dog anything we wanted to... just remembering that we had to call this name out loud in a public place (when walking the doggie). So, never had a dog named 'fluffykins' or 'softiewoftie' or 'cuddlywuddly'. lol

All my mums cats (she's had over 20 over the years) have been named after 'famous' (tv, book, and film) vampires. Including : Blue (after Sonia Blue - sunglasses after dark), Akasha and mekare, louis, marius,lestat...etc. we have a cat named Bagpuss - 15 years old now, and still going strong. Dogs names are a bit more dificult. However, each one of mums dogs has been named afterfamous people - Had a dog named (I can't believe I am actually going to admit this)... Oscar vittorio biscuit stud-muffin. The oscar was for Oscar Wilde. Our dog now is named Lily Lillian- after the Jersey Lily (lillie langtry), and Lillian Gish. I also like the name of the dog from the series 'Due South'... Deefenbaker. Though my family used to call the dog 'Deefourbarker'. (deefour = d4 = d for dog, barker is self-explanatory). This from the family who also wanted to name the cat ceefor. ( 'c' for cat). Oh, the shame *lol* Oh, and my nans dog was 'christened' in a pub with gin... so her name was Ginny.

Many thanks everyone for all your wonderful suggestions! And the winner is... ... ... Tilly! So special thanks to Em and Lara who both suggested that. It's short for Matilda, with its obvious Aussie associations, also Matilda is Old German (therefore apt for a German Shepherd!). The name means Battle Maiden, or Strength. Not too butch or scary-sounding, but not sissy either. So Tilly it is!! Anyway she's been good as gold so far, hasn't wrecked the garden yet, didn't howl too much last night so has got used to sleeping on her own already. Just built her a little paddling pool as it's HOT here today. I think that she's going to be a water dog! Off to the vet's on Wednesday for her vaccination shots, then puppy school and walkies as soon as possible thereafter! I might not be on the boards as much in the next few weeks, as I think that she'll be quite demanding on my time!! Cheers everyone, Richard

LOL Diana ... can't really call her XXXX! Mainly I drink Mid-strength, again not really suitable! Genie - maybe. I've actually been through the family tree seeking inspiration, the most fitting family name would be Maggie after gt-grandma Margaret. It means Pearl too which again fits in with the jewel theme. Thanks for Athene, Julie - that might be a bit hard to shout out in the park tho! Misty's already on my list, Holly's nice, Misha, Milly too.
