My youngest is off school today due to the strike. So why is it that the schools in 3 neighbouring villages are all open today?

Theres only about 3 schools in Hereford off due to strike, 2 secondary and my kids primary, i suppose it depends on how many people are on strike in the various schools. Star

I think it's to do with which Union you belong to, Mrs Haddock !! Unison is mainly council workers (don't bother putting the rubbish out today lol) & other local government employees. A lot of Teaching Assistants & Lunchtime Supervisors (dinner ladies to you & me!) are in Unison. The teachers themselves mainly are NUTS (ehm!) or other professional bodies. I think - apologies if i'm wrong! :0) Joan xxxx

Both my eldest are off. Rubbish bin is out in the hope that they had called it off and will collect. Can't go to library for hubby as they are out. No swimming pool for kids to go to Multi storey car park shut. Not teachers on strike is all the TAs dinner ladies, caretakers, secretaries, Schools are open if the board and heads think it isn't a health and safety issue and can get rouond the free school dinner situation (have to provide a meal for those on free meals)

Morning our Joanie! Daughter's headmaster states in a letter that as he has dinner ladies, caretakers etc striking he cannot ensure the health and safety of our children. Don't these other schools have caretakers and dinner ladies then?!! And funny you should mention the rubbish collection. I didn't put mine out this morning, but just 10 minutes ago I heard what seemed to be the dustmen in the next street. They usually get to me just after dinner, so I'll wait and see. My friend works part time in a library so she isn't in the union. Everyone else is striking but she still has to go in even though she won't be able to open it to the public. She did have the choice of going out in sympathy, but she would have lost a days pay!

Forgot to mention, if you were thinking of crossing the Humber Bridge, today would be a good day as there is nobody to staff the toll booths........so you can drive across free of charge! My sister came across this morning as we were going to lay some flowers to mark the 4th anniversary of my Dad's passing away. She was right chuffed cos she saved a fiver!

My youngest tried with a 'i've got a sore throat' but both of mine are at school. Sun's shining and I've done almost all of my housework!!! Just had to stop for a drink so thought I'd see what's going on on here. Have a good day wherever you are. Julie x

There are 9(nine) unions on strike today and every one that is out on strike loses a days pay. Luckily for me I am on holiday or I would have been out on strike.I am in GMB union. Sue

Morning Sue! Hope you're enjoying your holiday! I'm not saying that the strike is wrong, just that it seems a bit odd that some schools are managing to stay open and some aren't........especially as you say there are 9 unions on strike. Surely 9 unions must cover virtually all council workers.

Jeanette. There was a little boy of 9 in your area that wrote to the staff of the school. He wrote asking them not to go on strike and'' they weren't setting a very good example'' Don't know if the staff are on strike until Calendar tonight. Sue
