I want to replace the word 'spinster' , it sounds so horrible. Men are OK with 'bachelor', that sounds fine to me, but spinster - yeuch!. What can you suggest?

No suggestion but completely agree!! And why do we have to have Miss and then Mrs when we marry but a man stays a MR all his life?

Just wish I'd kept my real name when I married instead of changing it - I've thought of reverting back (though still happily married) but can't be bothered with all the hassle LOL

I was looking up Freecen 1841 Aberdeen-shire census and noticed several ladies listed as Spinster(s). I noted they weren't married and thought little about it. Then I realised this was their Occupation! They were actually Spinsters as in women who spin (thread/cloth) whatever!

LOL Christine :-)) I had thought of the word 'HAPPY' instead of spinster ;-))

I have used Ms for years. Don't like proclaiming to the world my marital or otherwise status but suppose Ms does suggest I am not married. Don't like the work Spinster but can't think of anything else.

Wasn't there a fairly recent announcement that ... Spinster.. would no longer be entered on marriage certificates? Vague memory, can't remember the details on this. Gwyn

How about maiden? Or bachelor girl ? Or bachelorette ?

Janice

Janice Report 21 Apr 2006 13:31

I agree that spinster isn't a nice word, and I also dislike Ms, but don't you think that 'relict' is horrible. I hate seeing it on gravestones.

I was always under the impression that Ms had been devised to denote the status of a divorced woman? Nowadays though I have known people to use it when addressing a woman in a letter, if they did not know her marital status.............I find that quite odd! I quite like the title Bachelorette, but then again what's wrong with plain and simple Miss? After all, that has always been a recognised title for a single woman.......up until marriage. Jen

Bachelorette?? Hmmmm - woth considering. What does everyone else think? If enough of us use it it WILL get into the dictionary.

I hate 'bachelorette' far too American. Single woman or just single sounds OK to me. Gwynne

Lindy

Lindy Report 21 Apr 2006 14:13

I don't care much for the word spinster either.! Bachelorette is a bit of a mouthful and maiden reminds me of an 'old maid ' I am not much help am I ? Lindy ;-))))))

Trish

Trish Report 21 Apr 2006 14:18

Thanks Lindy - I think LOL Gwynne, yes, single sounds good to me too. Let's see what others think. Whatever happens nobody must use the word spinster ever again LOL
