Hi. Bought a magazine yesterday (Q) which has a free CD of cover versions. Some of them quite good, some of them awful but thats part of the fun of it. Got me thinking - mostly, the originals are the best, but are there any cases where you prefer the cover version to the original ? Only one that comes to mind to me immediately is Jealous Guy - prefer the Bryan Ferry/.Roxy Music version to the John Lennon original.

ah well, I'm not sying its an all time favourite, but if I had a preference, I'd got for the cover and not the original in that case.

Hi Paul There's a skater type band version of Erasure's Respect that is loads better than the original - maybe Wheatus or Sum 41? xx Jen

one thats on the CD I mentioned, which I think works really well, is the Sugababes doing 'I bet that you look good on the dancefloor'... works really well. On the other hand, the Magic Numbers absolutely murder 'There is a light that never goes out'

Hi Paul, Love both versions of Jealous Guy, think I prefer B Ferry cover a smidge more though. Bryan Ferry is the master of cover versions in my opinion anyway. Kathleen

Charlotte Church covered a famous song in the Radio 1 Live Lounge... can't remember what but it was superb. She did Mario's 'You should let me love you'! Also saw the Sugababes live sing Arctic Monkeys' 'I bet that you look good on the dancefloor' - surperb!

Jen, I think it was Wheatus, but I think I preferred the original.

yeah, just nipped down and checked me Kerrang cd, Wheatus it was. I prefer it cos you can hear guitars etc rather than synthy bits. xx

Travis covering hit me baby one more time was brilliant. Mind you the original by Britney was so dreadful,it wouldn't have taken much beating. lol.

Paul Report 5 May 2006 11:40

ummm tough call on that one I think. I prefer the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah (and for that matter the Rufus Wainwright version too) to the Leonard Cohen original.

And Kirsty Macoll's version of DAYS to the Kinks original.

Say Hello, Wave Goodbye Although I liked the Marc Almond one I much preferred the cover by David Grey! Julie xxx

I think 'Have I told you lately that I love you' is so much better by Rod Stewart than Van Morrison (who wrote it). It is the background music on our son's Christening video. Kim

OK here's one. On the free CD I mentioned above (!), there's a song called 'august and september', sung by Elbow. Really nice song, hadn't heard it before. Looked it up, found the original by The The, downloaded it... definitely prefer the Elbow cover version.

Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy and not Sting.
