The one and only Leonardo da Vinci was one, as was Frank Sinatra. One-child families are on the increase in the UK and the fastest growing family unit in western Europe.

I think I would have hated being a only child, even though me and my sister hated each other when we where young, we are now the best of friends and these are they only friendships that last all your live. I'm now expecting my second as I think it will be good to have another child for my 2 year old to play. My O/H has one child from a previous marriage and she always seems to have no friends and spends lots of time with older people. Louise

I have to say I think the worst time of being a only child would have to be when you loose a parent as who else will be there to remember the same things as you. Louise

Can't imagine what it would be like to be an only child. I am one of six, OH one of 5. Must admit lots of arguments as we were growing up but great now we are all adults. We have 2 children. Hilary

I am an only child, and was quite happy to be until I grew up, then I had eldely parents, and no one else felt the same about them as I did, no matter how hard they tried. I have 3 children, now in there 20's and 30's and my heart bursts with pride when I watch them, helping each other with their children and home projects. Jennifer.

Only child until I was 11, I prefer to be on my own rather than with crowds of folk. I find it quite hard to mix and make friends, tend to hold back.

I'm the eldest of 5 of us. I have 4 kids also as I think it must be really lonely to be an only child and who else you gonna blame things on when you break something lol

I hated being an only, and enjoyed nothing more than going to our next door neighbours, five children and me we had a great time! I now have 4 children of my own all grown and married with their own families and is great to see them getting on well with each other.

Daughters daughter is only child and likely to stay so. She's 7 now and for the first 3/4 years of her life, she had an imaginary sibling, which quite worried us in the beginning. However, it doesn't appear to have done her any harm and now they have a beautiful dog called Sid. She treats him like a brother and loves him to pieces. Also, she get's on well with al her cousins. I was one of four and must admit I think having siblings helps prepare you for the outside world. You soon learn to give and take and accept you sometimes get blamed for something you didn't do. On the other hand, OH was an only child and as his mothe rwas very ill with epilepsy , he was raised by his grandparents. He always says he had a lovely childhood and felt he never missed out.
