Hi there, the short one in our house has been struck down by the worst tummy bug ever.....since early hours friday morning he hasn't kept anything down(or in!) it's a shame to see him lying ill on the sofa, as it's something he never does(7yr old adhd kid!) treid dioralyte, squash, ice poles, fruit shoots anthing to get some sorta fluid back into him. He got roaring temp too but got paracetamol/ibuprofen for that though. I cany give him lucozade coz the colourings that are in it, he's not allowed........anyone got any other ideas how to rehydrate shorty????? Me had v lazy day though! watching all the harry potter films and supplying juice/bucket/cuddles as and when was needed :-))) |

If he can have it, proper coke, the red and white stuff with a little sugar in to take out the fizz, it stops nausea, also, I know this sounds crazy but it does work, freeze grapes and let him suck them, they taste really nice and are very soothing......... |

Lucozade? Good grief such sweetness would make me worse if I was ill. Water all the way usually. |

Any Isotonic sport drink, such as lucozade sport When littluns up to eating, chrisps as well as (replaces salt) Drinking through a straw often appeals too, and will draw up more fluid quicker Elaine x |

oooh might try the grape thing :-)) Our water here is like pure bleach there's that much chlorine in it to fight of germykins!! (apparantly dead stag/sheep/frogs aren't healthy??!!) I have to put some sorta squash in it even just a splash to take the chlorine taste away. Everyone tells me give him lucozade and i get funny looks when i say he can't have it then they go 'oh i don't know what else you can try.........lucozade always works for me!' Any other ideas anyone????? |

All I can suggest is to go but some bottles of mineral water. That's what I would do. |

the sport drinks dont seem to have the same colourings that the origional lucozade has. also when connie was sick the other week, we bought chewits just as a bribe when the nasty antibiotics were taken (vile really vile) we found having the odd one gave her a suger boost and made her feel better enough to be able to drink more etc. of course sweets are not a long term answer. Think I'll get hubby to collect some bottled water on way home from work. Why is dioralyte so disgusting?? Tried sneeking it into squash but short one nor his tummy agreed with it. Is it 24 or 48hrs before doctor decides if it needs treated?? Think I'll try our nurses base if he not improving later to see what they reckon :-) |

Bottled water will not rehydrate no more than tap water. Its the sugar and salts that need replacing Try squash with a teaspoon of sugar in, that may help. Elaine x |

Oh i didn't know you got lucozade based drinks without colourings.....must go check our shop to see if they got any :-) Might try the chewits thing as well, I'm kinda loathed to tempt him with sweets but its gone on a bit long now so I'm sure one or two won't do any harm and as you say it's only a temporary measureand if it gets him to hold in some fluids then it's gota be worth a try!!! |

Bottled water is a bit more appetising than our bleach tasting stuff though!!! lol :-) I was actually thinking along the lines of the sweeter flavoured ones so it's a bit more tempting for him and might get some sugar into him. Is there a tummy bug sweeping the country just now????? How long does it last???? I thought these ones were 24hr ones but this seems to be a bit more stubborn :)))) |

Im not saying there are no colourings at all, but the origional lucozades colours are very bright in comparisom to the sport ones. Have a peek at the labels Elaine x |

Sorry to hear about your son. I was reading all the tips and I always thought it was a little salt in the bottle to flatten out all fiz. Maybe I have forgotten as it is a long time since I had any children at home. You could also bring down the temperature by washing him with tepid water not cold as this could shock him Frances |

I've got him looking like a notice board with all the kool+soothe patches he's got on!!! Was gona run him a warm not hot bath coz he got sore tummy and thought this might relax the muscles a bit, reckon it's sore because of all the wretching he's been doing. I'm not too concerned it's anything major like appendicitis as he had a grumbling appendix last year and was 10 times worse than this......!!! WIll be back on with progress report later!! Thanks for all your wishes & tips!! |

flat coke is very good if he can have it. I would phone up NHS direct and ask how long before he should have medical attention. children dehydrate very quickly. Ann Glos |

Another thing I had forgotten is to put a cold cloth on the back of the neck, you can also make lemonade with lemons and sugar, also an old trick of my mums (this is going back a bit) was to freeze sugar round the rims of tumblers not good for teeth but tempts tots to drink............. |

Plain yoghurt is the best as it will line the stomach. No fruit in any shape or form as it is acidic. Just get him to take small mouth fulls at a time but get him to keep taking some and you will find that he improves quickly. Health visitor gave me this tip many years a go and always pass this tip on. Hope little one gets better soon. Regards Jo |

My two small grandchildren had this a couple of weeks ago. My daughter was advised (by NHS direct) to give them flat coke and no dairy products at all - isn't it amazing how advice differs? |
