Hiya, having spoken to my Mum again it seems that the shunts Kelly had fitted when she was younger are not just tubes from her brain to her stomache, they in fact have lots of little filaments that are attached to her brain to relieve the fluid build up caused by pressure from her tumour. They often give no trouble ever, sometimes they cause lots of headaches and some people have loads of trouble with them. Kelly has been lucky up til now, but it seems that only 70% of these filaments are now working. They have relieved the immediate problem for her but in 2-3 weeks ( not sure of the reason for delay at the moment) she will have to go into Addenbrooks for surgery, they will drill a hole in her skull and look at the problems and see what they can do about it, probably a replacement operation from the looks of it. She is a remarkable young lady who is taking it all in her stride and was able to joke with my Mum tonight. What a star she is. Thanks again for your support and thoughts today. Yvettex

Yvette I know the surgery sounds gruesome, but it is the kind of thing that is routine these days. Keep positive! Nell

Hi Yvette - sorry to hear about your niece, but it's good they know what is happening. My partner's nephew has had a shunt from being a few days old (he's now 23) . The first one stopped working properly and so caused problems and had to be replaced, but he is fine again now. Hope all goes well for her. Jay
