I usually mix the paint with more water for a lighter tone, then use the paint more concentrated for a darker tone. Eg, when painting skies I use dark ultramarine blue, then mix more water with it as you get nearer the skyline (where the sky meets the ground). The weaker the mix the lighter the tone. :0)) Joan xxxxx

With the shadows i'd alwaydo light and work to lots of slightly darker tiny bits at a time

Donna, if you are trying to get a LIGHTER tone, then mix the lightest colour first... then add the darker one a *tip* at a time. I don't know exactly what it is that you are looking for but what I mean is..... If you want...say a LIGHT green with a yellow tinge to it mix YELLOW... and then add the green. Use this plan on all all your colours.... AND ALWAYS try them out on a separate peice of paper..... or you're lost! Does any of that help at all?? Deanna X

Sorry all, got booted off lol. My grey i use Paynes. When i did it all on paper, it seemed fine....just sort of went wrong on the real thing.......thanks for your help and yes, it makes alot of sense! Ive been using the darker colour first. Now thats scared me Joan, you were told not to use black or white?? Oh ek...........im told i have to. I could open a store with the paints ive got lol and ive got brushes galore.........trouble is, loads of the paints/brushes, i hate working with. Ok, my multi coloured kitchen sink is now clean lol And Gwen.....i am not painting starkers lol

Paul Ive decided to put my webcam back up and running.....i just hope i dont forget to turn the damn thing off when im painting....may not be starkers, but its easier to paint if i dont wear alot lol

Forgot to say, this isnt painting pictures etc, this is design stuff and i must go in with my colour wheel at this stage (ive got to design rooms next lol) god help me.
