Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 26 Jul 2006 13:09

ooooh Hi there Kim !! We had a lovely day thanks. Found the house in Northgate Road (the pink one!) and had a look at the houses in Out Northgate and the ruins of the hospital. Couldn't get any pix of that one as there was a huge green van parked in front! Thank goodness you or Kate took one for me previously! We found the cem - it WAS the main one - the office is shut down, but one of the (very nice young) men took the time to get his map and show me where the grave would have been. No stone, but I didn't really expect one - a widow with 6 young children would have had other priorities I think! Then we went to the Linden Tree and had a lovely lunch in their garden - mum was pleased to see a pair of thrushes who were by us the whole time - haven't seen one down this way for years! Didn't get lost, got parked surprisingly easily! Thank you so much for all your help - couldn't have had such a great day without you! Maz. XX I see there are still a few who agree with me that drink is at the root of the road issue lol !!

LittleWhiteDove2022351 Report 26 Jul 2006 11:52

No No No, its all to do with horses, you see horses don't like to walk in stright lines, thats why they wear blinkers when ploughing fields, they see only the side view on like us, so to keep them happy we made roads for them

The rolling English drunkard built the rolling English road. Ancient roads grew out of tracks which went round enclosed or farmed land. Time Team used the layout of a road to establish where the Boundary of a Site had been.

SheilaSomerset Report 26 Jul 2006 10:58

A lot of old roads follow ancient field boundaries - going along nicely and suddenly a 90 degree bend!

Maz, could it be it was easier to navigate a route around trees ,rivers, hedges etc.? Very inconsiderate of them not to forsee the future where vehicles would outnumber horses.

Sally Moonchild

Sally Moonchild Report 26 Jul 2006 10:32

In our area, we have country lanes, and years ago these were hamlets, and there were houses on them..........the cart tracks would pass the houses, and later roads were built........if you research I think you will find that there was a settlement there at one time. The farm near us, was listed in the Domesday book........along with a hamlet........
