all squiggly???!! were our ancestors all permanently drunk and couldn't walk in a straight line?! driving round the back of beyond today all the roads were twisty turny - 3 miles means at least 6 in the country! Maz. XX

It could be that horses didn't like straight roads. I was told that the Blackwall tunnel under the Thames has a bend or bends for that reason. Brian (i)

erm perhaps its because there were roads here ( well sort of dirt track roads) before the Romans... The Romans just ploughed straight through peoples land... before that folk just delicately tiptoed the roads round other folks fields etc no idea really.. lol

Em and Joan I reckon you could both be right there - still a pain in the rear end though! Brian, the north bound tunnel has quite a few bends, but the south bound one is quite straight. I think the north bound one is earlier - so it probably was designed around horses - maybe they didn't think they would mind so much if they couldn't see the whole tunnel at once! Nanna - I reckon that still happens lol Maz. XX

The reason Roman roads are straight is.......................they didn't like being driven round the bends!!! lol Nanna-M :))

In our area, we have country lanes, and years ago these were hamlets, and there were houses on them..........the cart tracks would pass the houses, and later roads were built........if you research I think you will find that there was a settlement there at one time. The farm near us, was listed in the Domesday book........along with a hamlet........

Maz, could it be it was easier to navigate a route around trees ,rivers, hedges etc.? Very inconsiderate of them not to forsee the future where vehicles would outnumber horses.
