PC internet help .........anyone???

she has brought the laptop to use at uni so i presume they have wireless connection that the students can use does anyone know? the bumf says that she has internet connection in her halls Bev |

Yes Bev you will have to connect the Broadband modem to her laptop and then probably install the software that came with it. What you have built in are a dial up modem and wireless capabilities but the wireless side will only work if you are already running a wireless network at home. You will not all be able to access the internet at the same time without installing a router. |

Errol you are correct we do not have wireless in the house Stu i will try what you say connect the wire from my PC into her laptop but then it would not be connected to my modem are you talking of setting up a local network??? sorry if i sound thick but at work i have a man i can E-mail about these things lol Bev |

Errol anyone with a wireless network thats not secure and within range she can logon and use that connection just like she can with the network next door Paul |

lol Tigger - commonly known as theft even if they are silly enough not to have secured it. Also bear in mind that it is a two way flow of information!!! In other words there would also be security issues for Bev. Like your thinking though lol Bev if you want to PM me I can talk you through it. |

Tigger we know she can connect with next doors wireless connection but is that legal??? i mean can he tell she has connected and will her files etc. be safe? Errol all we have done so far is try to connect with the cable that came with the laptop ie. one end in her laptop and the other into our phone line Bev |

The cable from your modem is the one which would need to be plugged into the laptop, or if you want the two online together you would need either a cross over Network lead or set up a wireless network, which would require some hardware |

Afraid that won't work Bev unless you are using dial up - two entirely different protocols. You have to go either through a broadband modem or a network and router. (there are other ways too but I'll not confuse the issue) |
