Frisbee got its name from William Russel Frisbee, who was a pie baker. He used to sell his pies in a thin tin pan, which had Frisbee written on it. When Walter Frederick Morrison thought of the idea of making saucer like disks to play catch, he visited the campus of Yale and noticed people there were using the pie pan to play catch so he therefore renamed his invention to Frisbee. |

Approximately 10.5 gallons of water is used in a dishwasher. Washing the dishes by hand can use up to 20 gallons of water. Therefore it IS better to have a dish washer |

Son of a Gun After sailors had crossed the Atlantic to the West Indies, they would take the native women on board the ship and have their way with them in between the cannons. Some of the women the sailors left behind would have boys, who were called sons between the guns ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Saved by the Bell When our ancestors realized that they were burying a great deal of people before their time had actually come, they came up with a solution. They tied a string onto the 'dead' person's hand, buried them, and tied the other end of the string to a bell and then tied it to nearby tree branch. If the person revived enough to ring the bell, their survivors would rush out and dig them up. Hence... 'saved by the bell' ........................................................................................................................................................... ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Mind your own beeswax: This came from the days when smallpox was a regular disfigurement. Fine ladies would fill in the pocks with beeswax. However when the weather was very warm the wax might melt. But it was not the thing to do for one lady to tell another that her makeup needed attention. Hence the sharp rebuke to 'mind your own beeswax!'.................................................................................................... ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... |

The word iPod comes from the 16th century Benedictine monastery at Harengs-Rouges set in the beautiful countryside of the Massif Central region of south central France where monks invented a musical contraption for the listening of sacred music whilst harvesting from the world famous annual bumper apple crop used in the manufacture of Calvados. Their cavorting and exuberance whilst toiling would often lead to the delicate yet highly prized skin of their crop being damaged and they would have to exclaim at the tops of their voices over the music 'y, peau!' (trans: 'there, skin!'). The term rapidly became associated with loud music, which in itself was often associated with the imbibing of copious amounts of the apple-based Calvados, and by the late 20th and early 21st centuries had been Americanised to become 'i, pod!' |
